Up until a couple weeks ago, I had never done a lapbook with any of my kids. As a matter of fact, I would look at the lapbook pages with all the cutting and pasting and folding and I would run the other way! I envisioned messes, frustration and hours of copying and preparing.
Then, last week I downloaded a freebie from Hands of a Child. I decided to try it for my 6yods who was totally bored with anything school related.
Well, we both are really enjoying it. It's not as bad as I thought in any regard and he's so excited to do "school work".
So, now I see that at Homeschool Share there are free lapbooks for all kinds of things! I can see having this ds do addition and subtraction lapbooks for math to help him with those facts. I see things for science that he would love doing as well as lapbooks for some of the read alouds we do. (I think cutting and coloring actually help this ds to pay attention to what I am reading. He needs to do things with his hands.)
My question is, am I crazy to attempt more than one lapbook at a time? I'm just so delighted with my ds's enthusiasm. He's definitely a hands on learner. Just to clarify, I wouldn't do lapbooks for all the subjects I mentioned above at once. But maybe have 2 going at a time, like one for math and one for science?

Becky,
We usually have 2 or three Lapbooks going in this family. I usually have a Lapbooks for Catholics book going. We only do that one on Fridays though and it takes us all year to do it. Then my kids usually have a author study going with a Lapbook.
I think the key is to print everything you are going to use in advance and then have it on hand in a special folder (I use a set of drawers) and assign a special day for each. For example if you are going to use the math one everyday then maybe on Wed and Fridays you can add the Science.
My littles love lapbooks so we use them to supplement A LOT!

Mimi's advice of printing before hand is good, I'd even consider with a 6yr old cutting before hand, or at least enough to start and then you could cut some more whilst sitting with him.
Btw I just found Lori's blog with lots of inspiring lapbooks, many for little ones.

The few lapbooks we have done are invaluable! I think we have all learned waaaay more than we would have given any other format. Yes, there is lots of cutting, pasting, etc. etc. but I find that it does help the attn. I started these mainly for my DS but my DD 12 loves them just as much and hates to be left out of all the "fun".

I do agree with Mimi,
We have found lapbooks to be a great resource and I know they have been a great learning tool.
We have been using them for most of our homeschool journey.

All of mine have loved lapbooks as well. We have usually only done one at a time, but it was because each one was a unit study. I think that doing more than one at once is a great idea if you don't rush the process.
For me, the most frustrating part of lapbooks is that when I do them with more than one child at once, they all want cutting and gluing help at the same time. So printing and doing the difficult cutting in advance helps.
I would also suggest that on lapbooks that aren't "pre-planned" or "pre-packaged," not to glue down the pieces until you have all or most of the parts. We've had more than one lapbook in which we glued right away only to find that a big piece needed to go in the middle where we'd already glued something smaller. (We would then add flaps, but sometimes the kids wished we hadn't had to do it.)

We have had times where we had several subjects going at once, but just alternated the days we worked on them. I have a son that cannot pay attention unless his hands are busy, lapbooks have helped us both tremendously. We have been doing them for many years & I hope to do a blog post on them this weekend.

Thanks for the encouragement! My first grader is really enjoying the one we are doing and my 4th grader has started one for the Revolutionary War. Now my 6th grader is jealous and wants to do one too!
I'll look forward to reading your blog post Martina!

Annie and I are fixing to start a Narnia lapbook. She just started reading the books this year and I think it'll be a great thing for her to have.
