Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Everyone,

I am currently doing Latina Christiana I with my dd, age 10 and in 5th grade. This child is dyslexic and has a hard enough time learning the rules of English and I am worried that this book is becoming a burden on both of us. We did Prima Latina together, and that went well, but all of the memorization of declensions, etc. in LC I is getting overwhelming. I think Latin is a good language to study and have some familiarity with, because it is the language of the Church, but is there an easier way to familiarize her with Latin at a gentler pace? Has anyone had any experience with CHC's Little Latin Readers program? Thanks in advance!

Tea,

My dds (twins now 17) have a processing problem similar to dyslexia. One thing that has worked well for them is making things as visual as possible. We stared with English from the Roots up cards and had them writing the words on red or green index cards, using the red or green dry erase marker on the white board and then into their notes....

They are finishing up Prima Latina and we will continue to do things as visual as possible. I am unsure if Latina Christiana or something else will work for them so I will be looking at this thread with interest. I remember one day having them stand up and act out the action verbs...it was great to do with all the kids until I got down to the end of the list...pugno and supero (I fight and I conquer) LOL...the boys got waaay to into it...

I do have them use different colored pens or pencils and highlighters etc to make new concepts appear easier for them. we have color coded parts of speech..endings or underlined to make anything new easier for them to picture.

They so want to go to a very Catholic College and learn theology so this would be something that they would need to learn for that kind of major so we will do it, even if it takes awhile and gets frustrating at times.

Let me know if you find anything that works well for your dd!

HTH!

We love Getting Started with Latin. We start using it in grade 4.

I finally broke down and bought the DVD's for LC1 this year. It's making a huge difference for my dd. My ds and I struggled with Latin terribly and I think part of the problem was that I didn't always understand it. For my dd, I bought the DVD's and she is getting a much better explanation. Plus, she is an auditory learner, so having the person on the DVD talk to her has made a big difference.

Thank you all for sharing your ideas! I am going to give Getting Started with Latin a try, and I am also going to invest in those LC1 dvd's, because I would like to revisit LC1 at a later date (maybe nex year?) and see if, after completing Gatting Started with Latin, we don't have a better outcome with it. At this point, I think it is just moving too fast for her, and as you mentioned Becky, I am sure that Memoria does a much better job of explaining the material than I have been doing

Tea,
I know you've made your decision and are moving forward with it....I just wanted to take a minute to jump in and confirm Becky's insight about the LC DVDs. We languished and floundered with LC, and I even purchased a different program because we were so stuck with Latina Christiana. In the end what worked for us were those DVDs. Each lesson is explained clearly and once we started watching them my dd moved through LC quickly and very well. Even with the purchase of the additional program, the Latina Christiana program was our preference and what we stuck with. I suppose I was somewhat astonished at the huge difference they made. I just wanted to share that with you for your consideration.
