Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have heard that CHC grade levels run "slow" meaning that their pre-k would be awesome for preschool age (3-4 yr old kiddos) and their k would be awesome for pre-k age (4-5 yr old kiddos). do you find this true? with some modification because of the writing skills but the content areas?

It starts slow and builds fast - but in a "gentle" way (not to sound like their website, but it's entirely true).

We used K-en lesson plans to check off work when my son was 3-5 (we do Montessori, but also use lesson plans to chart progress in a format other people can understand - plus we do use the resources!).

Then it veers from there - if your child can read in the 2nd grade plans, great! If not, you'll need to slow down the lesson plans for reading a bit, but it's not a hassle at all.

Just our take anyway :)

Awesome thank you. I am planning on purchasing the K-en lesson plans this fall/winter for dd who will be 4 in December. In addition to some printables/reproducibles we will be using CHC I think to prep her for STAA when she hits 5 yrs. unless something big happens this year we will hopefully be ready.

You could start it now - just doing the pieces that are the most applicable and go from there. Stretch Kindergarten out as long as you need; it provides more flexibility later when you want/need to take a week or more off for family stuff, just to have fun and do art projects (we did that recently!), traveling, to do nature walks, etc. etc. etc.

For the reading program, I integrated it with Montessori, using the flashcards they provide but first introducing the letter *sounds* copying each letter onto cardboard, covering the letter in glue then white sandbox sand to create sandpaper letters; then used their included flashcards for coloring and review. Then transitioned into the booklets.
(this all worked great as long as he didn't spend time with children of the same age who insisted that children are not allowed to read until they are in kindergarten or 1st grade )

That is one example of how we modified it - we used it as a structure and adapted activities when we wanted to.

I've enjoyed CHC because it highlights the critical stuff and leaves space for adaptations, additional activities, etc. I don't mind that we're on different pages of the lesson plans because I just check things off as we do them.

Kindergarten plans include preschool plans as well. So if you can, you might as well purchase them now, and maybe you would find enough ideas in the prek plans to delay the more formal kinder stuff until she is 4, like for the spring. My only issue with chc is really with any lesson plan.. we purchased the pk/kinder plans and the Little stories, but then my son was ahead in the phonics by mid kinder. So I just had to ignore that part of plans, and we didn't use the MCP math. The little numbers and letters workbooks are really sweet though. The extra ideas are great too, and lots of great advice.

Yeah she turns 4 in December and we aren't starting our "year" until after the holidays in 2012 (one of the joys and benefits of homeschooling right?). I am making a master library of reproducibles/printables to use since she likes "sit-down" work because she does some at preschool.

So for those who have used CHC for PK-K, what all would you suggest? The Lesson Plans, obviously, and LSLF... what else?

LSLF, God's Love story, Numbers for little folks, Letters for Little Folks. We didn't use the Kinder handwriting until the second half of the year when my son had more hand control.

What AmandaV said!

Except we did not use Letters for the Little Folks since we combined with Montessori and emphasized cursive for handwriting.

I used the preschool plans to record what we actually did each day, including practical life items (learning how to cut banana slices, sweep the floor, etc), art projects, etc. So I had a record of all those preschool skills.

For math at the preschool age, we stuck with straight Montessori; my mother sent some workbooks she thought were cute and my son did those as well.

We made sure to have art items around (colored pencils, blank paper, clipboards, playdough, sidewalk chalk, etc).

When you placed orders with CHC did you choose media mail or UPS shipping? I'm apprehensive about not having a way to track it...

Anytime I've ordered from them I've gone with the less expensive media mail and have never had a problem. I've ordered "something" from them at least five times in the last four years .

I'm using CHC first grade this year for LSLF and Science. I used the Kindergarten for half a year when dd was 4.5/almost 5. We did the workbooks for letters and numbers, but stopped after I had my third son that November. She wasn't ready for reading at that point, so I never finished the K program.

I do like their resources and have had no problems with shipping.

My now 4.5 year old son loves workbooks so I purchased a bunch from Amazon - dot-to-dots, mazes, numbers, letters, hidden pictures, etc. He likes to have "school" to do when dd is doing her work.

I'm using CHC's preschool workbooks this school year with my almost five year old and he loves them! He was very happy when lessons started again after Christmas.

Since the Letter Sounds book presents the letters in alphabetical order, I'm supplementing with alphabet books and online crafts.

Popping in for another question

if starting half way through the "school year" for 1st and 4th grade, what books would you start with?? I can't see spending $$ on the whole set right now.

Thanks again!

Krystin,

I don't know what you have from Seton already. If you aren't already using a Bible, you could get Fr. Lovasik's children's Bible that they recommend. Do you use Faith and Life or does Seton have their own religion? CHC uses Faith and Life. But if I were you and you want to be more CM, I wouldn't get the guide, just the student book, and use it for narration. This is what Mater Amabilis does for year 1B. The science 1,2,3 guide is good and is part of their first grade, as well as Science 2 for little folks as a supplement but you can also just utilize your library. I believe ekbell combines CHC and MA at this grade and might be able to help you with what is essential from CHC. I have the plans but just refer to them, and am mostly trying to do MA's recommendations. Oh, also, they recommend the entire Catholic Treasure Box series which I have collected mostly used on Cathswap this year. Even if I was following their plans more closely, I think I would leave off spelling, as my son seems more a second grade speller and I don't want to add more writing.

Hope that helps!
