Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

When searching at 4Real for information on italic handwriting, I found 63 topics but none dedicated to Italic handwriting alone. So, here we go!

I found this very interesting site, briem.net that offers free instruction and many other free items, including ancient books online.

From there I found Italics: Beautiful Handwriting for Children by Penny Gardner. I searched at 4Real for this title but didn't find it.

Like I said on Jodie's handwriting style topic:

Jodie, we've used Handwriting without Tears...

But I'm looking into Italic for my 11yo as a way to channel his need for precision and beauty. While pondering this I found a very interesting website and am now thinking that a family Italic bootcamp might be fun.

I'm wondering...

What has been your experience with Italic?

What resources do you use?

Have you used Italic after another style has been learned? Why?

Have you ever organized a class? Perhaps for mixed ages/family?

Thanks!

Love,

Angie,

I'll give my personal story, although I'm not sure if it will help. I learned the traditional ball and stick and Catholic school cursive. My cursive deteriorated, and by 11 it was illegible.

It was at age 11 that I started teaching myself calligraphy. The main style I wanted to learn was Italic, and the book I used was by Fred Eager, The Italic Way to Beautiful Handwriting, Cursive and Calligraphic . The link I provide shows he had other books for different ages. Unfortunately, it's out of print, but I think the idea is somewhat universal.

Learning to hold the pen, writing at a different angle, repeating exercises for precision really changed my handwriting drastically. I didn't change over to Italic handwriting, but the Italic method helped improve my cursive.

Oh, I just looked over Penny Gardner's site, and saw this

Quote:
Remedial Handwriting 101: For older students with less-than-perfect penmanship, try teaching an 8 to 12 week “Calligraphy” class. Adapt the above ideas to work with this older group. Working with calligraphy pens, even the felt tip ones, is a reward after learning basic italics. Watercolor paintings with poems written in calligraphy make lovely exhibits or gifts.

Seems exactly what I was talking about! My sister and I learned together, and I've helped my niece a bit. It's not hard; what is needed is self-motivation and practice.

Exactly! I learned how to write in a small school that still used many, many, many, (did I mention *many*) drills. Then I went to a large public school, was bored, and doodled or worked on making my handwriting on my own. Anyone else a pro at bubble letters?

As a hsing mom I thought, "No way!" to all that time and energy...and I still stand by that. BUT...I have had it in my mind that with the right motivation, attention, and practice, at this older age of my children, we could do a boot camp and have some fun with it.

Well, check out this super cool Handwriting Repair download.

Love,
