If your schooling consists of many read-alouds, what do you have your children do to keep from getting bored? Not everyone will listen with the same focused attention, and will want something to do with their hands. Besides colouring, what are some other activities you implement or can suggest?

handcrafts.. something useful not just busywork...
but crocheting, knitting, cross stitch, leatherwork, woodcarving, beading, weaving, etc
For littles.. legos, playdough, sorting, stringing beads/macaroni/etc.

The big thing at our house right now are these Puzzellations magnet "things" Amazon link
I also get out pattern blocks for the littles along with our zoob animals and small things like that.

Along the same lines, (not to take over this thread-I will start a new one if need be!) but how do you fit all the read-alouds in?!
I'll have a 2nd grader, K'er, and almost 3 year old twins. I can't seem to find the time to do all the reading they want plus school work, housework, cooking, etc.

Actually, any food time is a good time for reading aloud!
And, I'll add one - CHORES!!!! We do afternoon read alouds while all the kids do their after lunch clean-up. Someone does dishes, someone sweeps, someone clears, someone wipes down all surfaces...and I read. Works out great because ALL hands are busy!

My read alouds are all centered on food! I read history books in the morning while the kids eat. At lunch I read science. At tea time I read from what I just call "literature". Tea time is also the time for reading poetry and doing picture study.
Since my kids usually get done eating before the reading is over, I also keep a stack of drawing journals (of various types) near. The older ones sketch from what is being read (they've created some awesome sketch journals of history books we've read!), the little ones just draw.
It doesn't always work out so peacefully. The 2yo often gets bored with drawing and he will sometimes go play in the playroom. If things get really bad, I have one of the older kids put a dvd in for him.

I read during bath time. I'm sitting in the bathroom with them while they play anyway- I tidy up the counters while the water is running and once they're in with their bath toys I read a chapter before I scrub them. :)
My younger one does a lot of playdough and coloring while I read during the day. My older one is suddenly very interested in reading along with me, so he either sits with me and I point with my finger as I read, or if we're able to get a second copy of the same book from our library he *really* likes to follow along with his own copy. He has always been a kid that loves to just sit and listen though.
