I don't teach reading until the child has shown certain physical readiness signs (like loosing the first tooth -- this is how you determine school/academic readiness in children in Germany where I grew up), say age 6 or seven, but when they have reached that milestone I really like:
Little Stories for Little Folks by CHC. It doesn't take very long and you get to read mini stories right away.
From there you can go to readers right away.

My dds went to a Catholic school K-part of 2nd grade and learned to read (or not) there. I used Little Stories for Little Folks with both boys, and they are both good readers.
I thought the CHC program looked "too simple" but it worked very well, and was easy on the teacher.
FWIW--My guys disliked 100 Easy lessons when I tried it.

I like Little Stories for Little Folk too.. but I have a couple of children that struggle more than typical.. and I have also found Explode the Code to be very helpful with them.
And I have one child that I made my own flashcards for.. she simply could not learn to read with phonics so we did sight reading and now I threaten to take away the books

I use alphabet flash cards and Leapfrog Refrigerator Phonics for sounds, then jump into the Bob Books.

We have been using Explode the Code with success, but it is getting "hard" for my 6 year old. (Though, my 4 year old is still loving the "Before the Code" books). He knows all his sounds and can spell well, but he is REALLY struggling with blending, and the pages of reading short sentences is super draining for all involved.
However I JUST (as in this morning, lol) in doing the classic I'm-frustrated-there-has-to-be-a-perfect-solution search came across this set of readers called I See Sam which are in the public domain. Both my 4 year old and 6 year old are already FAR more enthusiastic about them than they ever were the Bob books.
I've been contemplating the CHC readers, but finding this one my boys are enthusiastic about for free means I'll at least put it off for a bit.
Here you can buy them printed and bound for less than a dollar a piece.
Supposedly the entire set of 52 constitutes a full reading program that has been proven successful for many.

I started out using Reading Reflex with my first, which was recommened after reading Why Our Children Can't Read and What We Can Do About It.
The Pros are that the program is cheap and effective (at least for my ds), the Cons are that you have to either cut apart the book or make your own manulitpitives and read thourgh the book to set up your lessons (which isn't too bad).
HOWEVER, since teaching my first I have found ABeCeDarian Company. This program uses the information in Why Our Children Can't read and IMO does a better job of presenting the material. It also uses a workbook format, which requires no prep work from me. Despite the "work book" each page is concise and manageable in length with out a "drill and kill" approach.
The Pros of this program are is ease of use , very effective and has yahoo support. The Cons are that the program is a bit pricy with the teachers manual, but not prohibitive.
I can't sing the praises of ABeCeDarian enough! Love this method!

So, in my enthusiasm, I didn't look that closely. The site with the downloads only has the first two sets, but the site for purchasing has the complete series (which, its the entire series which is "comprehensive").
Anyway, my 6 year old who was very, very glum this morning over not reading well is STILL loving these books (we've been quickly printing, stapling, and reading them in order all morning, and again, he seems to like them much better than he did the Bob books). So, I'm still enthusiastic, its just not quite as "free" as I'd thought (unless I find the other books somewhere else if they, too, are in the public domain).
