Help!!!!!!! I've seen references to rabbit trails but can't find any information as to what, exactly, they are. Any definitions, examples, references to homeschooling books or places online would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Anne Marie

Hi, Anne Marie,
A quick answer: "rabbit trail" was coined (I think) by Elizabeth Foss and/or Macbeth Derham to mean the ways in which we take a "side trip" in our studies.
A simple example: Let's say you're reading "The Secret Garden" with your children, and you all become intrigued with finding out more about India (where the book begins.) So, you follow a "rabbit trail" and dive into India for awhile ... it's connected to what you've been doing, but wouldn't necessarily be part of a strict study of "The Secret Garden" as such.
Does that make sense?
in Christ,

Lovely answer, Karen! I started to respond yesterday, but got side tracked and never returned. So glad you answered!

Thanks, Karen!
That's what I thought it sounded like, but I wasn't sure. Rabbit trails sound like homeschooling around my house!

Anne Marie,
You can see some examples of Rabbit Trails here on this forum. The Jan Brett thread and the Story of Ping thread show how you can start with a story and go all sorts of places

Well, can Rabbit Trails be planned? Using the example The Secret Garden, can you decide to use that when you're studying India? More like a unit study, or the definition means unplanned shoot-offs from the original version?

I think you can plan them.In our house they look like unit studies; they start with a plan, but often they take off on tangents. Here's a SEcret Garden/India unit.
