Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Do any of you ladies with multiple children make any attempt to acquire multiple copies of books to save for your children's children?

Well does the fact that I already have five boxes of books labeled 'grandchildren' answer your question?

My oldest will soon be 17.

I have to start doing this. For years I collected enough for my siblings, and right now if I get extras of treasures I pass them to my sisters. But I do need to think about starting their own libraries.

And what books do you save, Erin?

As I think of just my age, books published in the 50s and 60s are now over 50 years old! And while we live in a wonderful age where many classics are being reprinted, I'm not always too pleased. To me, nothing replaces a good hardbound book, and with a dustjacket, it's a dream.

Landmark books are being reprinted, but in paperback and sometimes revised editions.

Catholic books are being turned out, but in softcover mostly.

It's a tragedy, to me. I understand I'm a thing of the past, because so few people want to pay for hardcover, books are now being printed in China to keep budgets low, and most little Catholic companies can't or won't do that.

So, that makes me turn to the used books, the originals. But will these older editions last another 25-50 years?

What kind of books will you find and pay for multiple copies?

We have made sure that every child has a hardback copy of certain books. Some of those include Good Night Moon, The Napping House, The Snowy Day, Corduroy, etc. Then each individual child has some hardback books that have been labeled as theirs to take with them when they go, these express more of the individuality of each child.

I am very grateful to have had a mother who saved many of my childhood books, which I am now able to share with my children, so this is a very deliberate project for me.

God Bless,

Anita

I think I will just homeschool all my grandchildren and thus keep the library intact at my house!

Well in the boxes are some of the doubles of the children's choices; Redwall, Hardy boys, Trixie Belden etc.

Then there are the books that I find at op-shops that are real treasures. Second copies that is; Virgina Burton books, Little Grey Lighthouse, hardcover Philomena by Kate Seredy. Anything that I consider a treasure and worth keeping I put away. Op-shops are very cheap here, about 10-50c a book and one op-shop gives books to homeschoolers for free!! so I collect for my grandchildren.

I can't say that I collect books for my children's children but there are books which I've bought for each child (including one or two bought for possible children ).

I must admit that the only books that have reliably stood up to my children have been cloth and leather bound books.

Neumann press hardcovers, The Art-Literature reprints from Lepanto Press, the Every Man's Library Children's Classics; these stand up to my children - most children's hardcovers don't.

BTW the Every Man's Library Children's Classics series offers quite a few good books with binding that can stand up to a fair amount of abuse at a reasonable price.

Well, I will be the dissenter here.

I haven't got the money or the space for such a thing!

Whatever books we have left when they are grown up, they will have to divvy up between themselves, or not, as they see fit.

Besides, I think at least one of them has a vocation to the priesthood, and I'm not counting on having grandchildren

"Dissenter" (AKA, Allegiance Mom)

I think we're in the same boat...I'm still compiling THIS library, as we're relatively new, compared to most of the pros here, to homeschooling. So while I kept lots of MY favorites from childhood, there are so many more I never knew about until recently.

If I ever win the lottery, I suspect that 90% of my winnings will be spent on books...
