I was speaking with another homeschool mom today and she mentioned the private schools asking for transcripts for 7th and 8th grade for admissions. I am not sure where ds (entering 7th in fall) will go for high school but I am trying to be prepared for any eventuality.
We do our Singapore Math, are finishing Winston Grammar(but it wouldn't show on a 7th grade transcript because we did it 5th and 6th), he reads a lot, and we learn about stuff we are interested in.
His Iowa scores are awesome in most areas so I relax, especially when it comes to writing and language arts. He really does read a lot. Math is his low spot but still OK.
I know I can make a transcript but we really don't do anything super organized except math.
I am getting a little worried. Couldn't they just take the test scores?
I am trying to plan for next year and I need the experienced mom's to assist here

Anne, I wouldn't sweat this. A transcript at this level can be a simple list of "classes" to include feedback on grading. My guess is that the school wants to know what the student has studied and how well the student did in the subject. If you don't have to include a course description for each class, then you don't have to worry about how you define each class or the grade.
You may want to give the schools in question a call for clarification and perhaps ask for samples of what they want. You might also want to ask if they have testing requirements and/or if they give their own entrance exams.

I've had three go from home to private Catholic high schools. All I did was type up the list of classes, grade for each, and books used, if there was a text, otherwise, I tried to keep a list of all those books from the library for our history and science! It wasn't terribly fancy or official looking, either. I think they just wanted an idea of what we used; although they go more by the test score in cases of homeschooling. (A side note-ds's high school is now requiring new students from one particular k-8 Catholic school to take summer school for their math, no matter their test score or grade in the class. I think that is more of an instructional issue.)
Oh, and the schools here in our area use the High School Placement Test (HSPT.) I bought a practice book for that test at Barnes and Noble for this last ds. He worked on it from August to Nov. (when the test was,) and it really helped him, just getting used to taking a standardized timed test, and knowing the format for this particular one.

Angie,
I am not sure what schools we would consider-and dh may have a job move so that will make things more crazy. Maybe I could call a few to get an idea.
What do 7th graders study? What is the usual course of study?
Math
LA-which would include writing, literature, grammar???
Science--which ones
History-is it OK we are in the second half of American?
Foreign Language?

When I was teaching 7th grade at a public charter school (and before that at a Catholic school) the kids had basically 4 core courses: Math, Language arts, Social Studies, and science. Then they had a couple electives, usually PE and art. At Catholic school there was also religion.
At that age you do not have to differentiate exactly which science they took because unlike in high school where specific sciences courses are taken (biology, chemistry, etc) 7th and 8th grade are still general science. You can certainly pull up your state's standard course of study (most have them easily accessible online) and if you feel you have covered those topics (or comparable ones) then just say that, (ie "followed state standard course of study for 7th grade science"). Social studies and language arts are the same situation. Math is, too unless you've done an actual algebra course in 7th or 8th grade and then you would distinguish that from the standard curriculum.

Thanks, Theresa. That was helpful. I'll dig though my state stuff online (and the state I like's standards  ) tomorrow.
We might be doing algebra in 8th--it is what I am shooting for....
