Hi all,
I get a magazine or ad from "The Great Courses" every now and again and it seems to offer interesting DVDs/audio cds on various topics/lectures given by college professors from around the U.S. I never purchased any due to the cost, but I wondered if anyone has ever purchashed them and what they are like? Would it be something a highschooler could profit from??? Just wondering as some of the offerings looked interesting to me.

Did you get a sample with your last catalog? I did. I haven't listened to it yet. I too am interested if anyone has used them.
Maybe you can call and get a sample CD.

Is this the Teaching Company Catalog? If so, my boys (not in high school yet) have really enjoyed the high school history courses taught by Linwood Thompson. We have the world history and American history courses... they DO go on sale quite frequently and right now are listed on their website at more than $200 BUT I know we didn't pay over $70 (still pricey, but my guys have watched them over and over and have learned so much)
The history lectures by Linwood Thompson are especially good because he dresses up like a character of the time he is talking about and speaks with a related accent (I think he was also a drama teacher)
We also have the course on the Revolutionary War but my guys call that teacher "the boring guy". My oldest (14) still likes the series but my youngest (9) zones out with that particular professor... I think they are geared to college level where the fore-mentioned series is high school level and even keeps my youngest engaged.
Our library system also has quite a few courses available so you may want to check to see if you could borrow them instead of purchasing.

I used a few of these in college for independent study courses in history - My history professor recommended them.
I've seen them at thrift stores too for around $5 or so

I have quite a few of them. My oldest is not yet ready for hs but when she is, we will be using them then. I have been very happy with the ones that I have listened to so far. I am listening to Shakespeare: Word and Action right now. This is an excellent lecture series.
You do need to be careful on what topic you chose. I wouldn't buy a set on a religious topic. The only ones I have chosen are from math, history and literature. I just bought a DVD set on The Louvre. It is very good but they do show nudes for some of the paintings. Just thought I should give a heads up for that.
They just had a giant sale at Christmas, so if you hold out for awhile, you can get some the sets at a pretty good price.

My husband and I have watched several of the courses by checking them out from the library--a much cheaper route!

We've had some good and some not as good.
The Shakespeare one we have (Comedies, Histories, Tragedies)is pretty good, though I wish the speaker was a bit more engaging.
I enjoyed the Joy of Science, though that was many years ago, so not sure if it is the same one they offer now. I hope not, as science has advanced a bit since then!LOL!
But the high school level Basic Math, well...lets just say ds took to calling him "Professor Boring". The course, though, is a good, complete high school math review.
I also bought the High School level Algebra I, (with a different speaker) but never even opened it as we decided to go a different route, so I can't say how good or bad it is.
