I know this magazine is pretty popular around here - I've got a few questions before I subscribe.
If I only have a little one {just starting K} will it be useful to me?
and
On the website when I go to subscribe it says the first issue will be the summer one {July} - is that right? Because I also see where the spring issue is mailed in April. It's only January so I'd hope I can start with the April issue and not have to wait and wait.

Margot, the publisher, is a member here. I'll see if I can get her to stop over here and answer the subscription date question.
I think this is a useful magazine for homeschool parents at all stages. The unit study section is general geared to an older group of students, but most of the rest of the magazine is more general topics and day to day stories of homeschooling in the trenches and just inspirational articles. The reviews section covers materials for all ages and topics. To me it seems beneficial for new homeschoolers with ones as well.

Thanks, Mary,
For letting me know about the question.
Hi Dakotamidnight!
I'm not sure why that part about it starting in July is still popping up . . . I was sure I had fixed that. But, sometimes I'm not the best at Internet commands.
The magazine is mailed quarterly and your subscription will start with whatever issue is closest to when you subscribe. We are having some trouble getting the winter issue out (it was supposed to be mailed this month, but won't go out until mid-to late-February--Christmas and other matters slowed us down). So if you subscribe now, you'd get that issue next month. The following issue would be sent in April (God willing), etc.
The spring issue features teaching the younger students, so you may find it useful. However, even if you haven't started homeschooling yet, I think you'd appreciate the magazine. It's all about homeschooling moms telling their stories and sharing what works for them. Some of the stories are quite poignant, some have nothing to do with homeschooling, but are just about mothering.
Blessings,
Margot

I highly recommend it even if your kids are younger

My boys are 2.5 and 1 and I have to say that I got a lot out of my first issue (thanks MIL for the great Christmas gift!). There were reviews for picture books and some really good overview ideas that I can mull for a few years until we start more formal academics. The unit study introduced me to a Catholic novelist whom I'd never heard of and now am enjoying.
So I guess my answer is yes. It isn't the #1 resource I use obviously but it without a doubt is already enriching our living/learning environment.

Does mater et magistra have a lot of advertising? I really have a hard time with glossy ads. I think it's my ADD...
I've been considering a subscription too...
Thanks!

Maddie,
The magazine does have ads. The ads are important as they help defray the cost to print the magazine. The print of the magazine is all black and white though, so they don't jump out at you. They're not glossy images. I don't find them distracting. Many of those that choose to advertise in the magazine are small Catholic businesses, those that I really try to support, so I appreciate them being there. HTH a bit.
I couldn't recommend Mater et Magistra highly enough! The magazine is generally focused around a theme. Some articles are very general, pointed more towards the vocation of home education, while others are clearly of use for specific ages. I keep ALL of my magazines for reference in future years. Whenever I'm feeling like our days are a little flat I pull out my stash for inspiration! The unit studies, reviews, articles, ideas, perspectives...are all treasures of information and inspiration that nurture a Catholic home educating mother.

Just wanted to say that my kiddos are only 6 and 4 and I really enjoy the magazine. Also - I was going to say "No, there aren't any ads" and then was surprised to hear others say that there are. So obviously, they aren't too distracting to me - and these kinds of aesthetic things are a concern for me as well.
