Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Julie Bogart’s latest post was a help for me...homeschooling ( unschooling) when life is difficult. So I am passing it on!

I can attest to the point about TV and movies and video games..we tend to do more technology when things are tough for me and, you know, the kids learn anyway. And when things improve, I find it easy to add in things that can eventually take over so much screen time...

Homeschooling Through Grief

I saw that too and thought she was right on the mark. The only thing I would add to that would be to consider homeschooling year round. My mother became sick last March and died in June, so we lost a lot of time in the spring. I kept things simple, did what we could, but knowing that we could continue working through the summer time as needed made me feel much less pressured.

I also think that having kids see us grieve is a part of homeschooling. Grieving as part of a family can be a very tender part of family life, and one that perhaps kids in school all day postpone or never get to experience fully.

She always has such good articles.

We have never been through an intense period of grieving here but, interesting though, what she described as a doable routine through a hard time seems to be our general routine- my highschool age student definitely mostly self studies, and the 3 r's are our goal most days.

Same here! Plus strewing, for all those wonderful ideas!

Julie's post also inspired me to write a blog post, as we in Australia approach the start of a new school year..what are our plans? How do they mesh woth our real, often not picture perfect, life?

Btw, another great post from Julie...keeping the home in homeschool.

Reminded me to emphasize the homey, comfy, relaxed part of the homeschooling equation. You're at home. Be homey. Support, nurture, be gentle.

Julie is on a roll!   I would love to print the Keeping Home in Homeschool off and secretly send it to some of my friends who spend hours and hours in the car and lots of $$$ to "homeschool?"
