Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

After readingJen's blog post about the book, The Way Things Work, I was thinking that would make an excellent birthday gift for my ds. I noticed there are two books - The Way Things Work, and the New Way Things Work. Is one better than the other?

If I remember correctly the New Way Things Work is just a expanded version The Way Things Work with additional pages on microchips and the like. Most of the pages are exactly the same.

Becky

I was inspired by Jen's post too

I have the computer CD too but it is not compatible with our newer computers (the same with all of our DK CDs) Does anyone know if there is someway to still make it work?

I was at the library today and they had a whole slew of vidoes related to this book. They're only 13 min. each so I wouldn't buy them but if they're available at a library near you, they might be worth checking out. They're by Schlessinger Media and I've loved all their videos I've checked out for the kids. Very well done. Well, I can't find them on their website but the covers said "Based on the book by The Way Things Work by David MacCauley".

Ok...I found one of them about pulleys and it says you can view a clip and there's also a teacher's guide.

I know this doesn't relate to your original question but I just wanted to share the info so hope it's helpful.

Hey! That's a great resource!! Thanks, Kathryn!

Becky,
Though I don't have The New Way Things Work, I'm pretty sure the two books are similar with The New Way Things Work containing updated technology type info. as ekbell said. Wonder how they get a mammoth into a microchip? Somewhere, and I can't remember where I read it now, there were more than a few reviews that didn't care for The New Way.... Just throwing it out there, and I hope my memory isn't off... I'd read the reviews on Amazon first. I can't compare for you - sorry. We had the original on our shelves as a hand-me-down from my mom's days of homeschooling my brother and sister so that's what I'm using.

Erin,
I love Dorling Kindersley (DK) materials, so a few years ago I jumped at the chance to grab a few CDs they made on science topics (The Way Things Work was not one of them, btw). I could never get them to work correctly on our computer. We tried and tried - multiple CD's on different computers. I was bummed because they looked neat.

Thank you all for the kind words on the post! We've been having fun with this!

We very much enjoyed your recommendations,Jen! My ds loves that book and we did a unit on that almost 4 years ago?! My time flies! He had me put a few more links on my blog about it. He is such a science guy. He is now using that book to teach his younger brothers and sisters..ok, me too

He is going to make a few science kits for the younger boys for their birthday in a few months. He told me not to waste my money on too many fancy science kits because he learned enough how to make one from scratch on his own! So I guess those who learn-teach!

HTH!
