do you take 'em? My kids always complain because I don't let them off school when all of their friends get off for snow. There's no snow between the upstairs and the downstairs to keep them from getting to "school". They're usually done with school by lunch, anyway. I just don't see a reason not to "do school".
We had several inches last night and every school for a hundred miles is closed, so they were hassling me, yet again.
Just wondering what you do.

We don't get much snow here...so it's not likely to come up as an issue with us. Funny how kids think things through such as this

We usually do take snow days, just because we only get a couple a year! If we got them all the time we wouldn't. For example, this year the public schools have been out all week due to snow. Today it's too cold to go out and play anyway, but we are only partly back from Christmas break, so it's kinda half and half. They are doing math right now. That will probably be about it. But if we were back to school full time, we wouldn't have taken all week off. They get lots of school days off that the public schools don't!

We usually negotiate a deal. If you work hard and get the basics done (math, read a bit in some other subject), then you can go out in the snow. And I count it as a school day for "administrative purposes", ahem, the State.

It kind of depends. Today the schools around here are closed but considering my kids have done ***NO SCHOOL*** at all for going on 3 weeks, I insisted they do something this morning before going to play. I remind them that they still do lots less "schooling" than their neighborhood friends anyway but mine are old enough to really understand that even if they don't like it.

we are doing school (i'm so mean) today, but we will still play in the snow all afternoon. And recess was outside on the snow piles. :)
We can sometimes get more done on snow days since we can't go away from the house.
Yes we had more than 5 inches here this morning.

Snow days - no we don't take them. But, that being said, I do flex a lot and we do a lot of PE on those days.
Our situation is this - not much snow happens here and when it does, it is the only chance my children have to make snowballs and snowmen and think about snowflakes and ... so the snow kind of gets worked into our day. It is also wonderful because the whole city shuts down so there is absolutely nowhere anyone goes - 0 car time. We definitely do some sledding if we can. Already our driveway is completely packed, I had to call dh and warn him that there will be plenty of ice under any snow on our driveway when he comes home from work - we are expecting the office to close early. Right now all the schools are out and possibly tomorrow too. So far the roads are not officially closed except some overpasses - but I suspect that by later today they will be. My dh may not even have to go into work tomorrow  so I'll have him for science coaching possibly and we will take full advantage and probably do some physics experiments - I'm sure he'll explain traction and turning the wheel and all that stuff to our recent or learning drivers - but that also becomes a lesson in physics!
Some of my thinking is this - most of my children have this idea that the best way to do school is to sit down and get it over with as quickly as possible. However, we have a lot of far-sighted folks and had vision issues. Taking breaks from close work makes work more efficient. Being normal children, most don't think I'm very smart when I tell them that they should take a break between math and .... So they are inefficient and take forever to get work done. On snow days - they get to see for themselves how smart I really am. Snow days, we get tons of work done - because we basically go play for a while, come in frozen (remember we are dumb snow people so we don't have snow boots or water protection and the coats you get here are not as warm as what is sold in other regions - I know because the warmest stuff we've had is the stuff my mil saved from my dh young days or the hand me downs from northern relatives .... and we typically use cookie sheets for sleds) do some work while they are warming up and then take a break to go out in the snow. Now they might tend to freeze - if I didn't periodically require warming up so I do sometimes have to tell them to come in. Also you have to remember that I can deal with the piles of slush and gloves and messes from in and out because I only remember 2 times ever that the snow actually was on the ground more than 1 day.
My 12 year old just shared with me how amazed he is at the amount of work he has completed. I know he remembers it better from having all that snow/outdoor time. Most of the time, I have to fight so hard to get them to break between subjects and the older and more independent they are in learning, the less they listen to me about breaks until they finally see it for themselves.

I think it matters where one lives! Here in texas we only get about 1 day of snow per year! So, yes - we will take off. Actually what usually snows in the morning is gone by the afternoon so it is a built in half day most of the time. One time last year it was snowing beautifully in the morning but the ps kids had school - there we were playing in the snow as they headed off to school!

No.
No snow days and no sick days here--insert saluting smiley here.
I find the change in weather to inspire my kids get more done. The energy release after schoolwork in the snow helps the next day, too.
We also get more done in summer when we can hop in the pool for a swim or take a playground break.
Sick days--I am a little softer--but I try to get a little done. If a high fever and they are out of it, of course, they can go sleep. But a little cold requires a try at some math or LA. Usually they can do it.
So, that allows the flexibility we need to deal with frequent house guests and travels--and homeschooling.
We don't school well on the road or with people in the house so, no snow days here.

We don't take 'snow days'
First any day that would be considered too dangerous for city schools to close would be dangerous to go outside in, and I find lessons help a great deal with stir fever when we can't go outside.
We are more likely to take unseasonally warm days instead -an unseasonably warm day is an excuse to go outside and investigate (we live in Chinook country)

We take them!!!!!! And love them. But, they happen so rarely, it doesn't really count. But, we take LOTS of days off in general.

We don't so much take snow days.. our schools here rarely if ever take them.. and we have the cold and frequently the snow.. but the snow only stays playable for a day or two.. then it's too hard and icy for fun.. so yes I do let the kids go out and play if we've got a reasonable amount on the ground.. but it's cold and they're willing soon enough to come back in and then we start on the day.
Plus the kids usually shovel for us and for any neighbors that need help by their own initiative

We don't - there's plenty of time at lunch and after school to play in the snow, and we trade those days for feast day "off days." I'd rather take off December 8...
My kids are old enough to help clear the driveway, so they get chore time credit when they do that.
LOL...our big snow in December was on a weekend...but, it's snowing now, so we'll see how tomorrow goes.
