I was sharing on this thread how I enjoy the freshness and renewed enthusiasm the season of autumn brings to our home and myself in particular. Maybe it's because summers are particularly oppressive in the deep south, but fall is so welcomed here! I wanted to share and gather some ideas from all of you creative ladies to see how you reflect some of the seasonal beauty in your lessons and days of home education.
Poetry We chose some new seasonal poems together - one for each of the children. They are excited to do copywork from these poems and add them to their notebooking pages
The Arts/Crafts I've chosen some fun autumn songs for learning - Scarlet and Yellow, Golden and Brown, The Winds, The Squirrel, Oh Queen of the Holy Rosary. I also set out our favorite craft books for ideas for autumn crafting. We've been reading about the Impressionists here, so we'll be doing some painting in the style of the Impressionists of autumnal scenes.
Nature Walks/Science Investigations I've made some notes on ideas for autumnal nature walks - nutting hunts, leaf collecting for leaf garlands for the windows, seed pod investigations, etc. I enjoy taking a look at patterns and symmetry in nature every season - so we're planning a walk with that in mind soon. I thought we might enjoy taking an up close and personal look at the pumpkin with our microscope this fall, as well as any other transparent seed pods we might find.
Copywork, Dictations These often come from seasonal poetry (not always the ones we're memorizing), or from a piece of literature that reflects the season through an author's words, or from a saint's quote that reflects the season of the liturgical year.
Preschool Work I had lots of fun setting up a little pumpkin picture book theme for my little 4 yo fella. He just loves pumpkins!
Please do share what ways you incorporate the season of autumn into your homeschool days! I'd really love to learn more ways to do this!

Well, I just have two 3yo's that I'm working with, so we're definitely not schooling in any formal way, but here's what has changed in our home over the last week or so:
-- I picked up our favorite fall picture books from the library, and we're having so much fun re-discovering them this week.
-- Now that I'm over my morning sickness and the weather is cooling down, I anticipate our spending a lot more time outdoors. I'm getting a few small boxes ready for their "finds" (they love collecting anything and everything at this age!), and I'm planning to make some small mesh messenger-style bags for them to tote their treasures in while we're out and about on walks or at the park.
-- I've incorporated a few fall poems into our morning basket this week, and the kids are already quoting parts of them throughout the day. Love that!

We've had to jump right into winter plans with the snow we now have. Frankly, our autumn decorations look funny covered in snow!

 I feel your pain Paula!! I was just looking at our Autumn table wondering if I should change it to a winter table. And our poor pumpkins look pretty sad under almost 2 inches of snow!! I feel cheated!

Sorry Jennifer for hijacking your thread. I love your ideas about celebrating Fall.
We have had a lot of fun making leaf people. From the library we checked out the book Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert. It is the story of a man made out of leaves who changes into many different creatures and items as the wind blows him. It is written from a child's point-of-view.
So we went for a walk down by the river and collected lots of different leaves, seeds, nuts, twigs, etc and used them to make leaf people. I gave each child a piece of clear contact paper and the children stuck the leaves to the paper to create their leaf person. I then placed another sheet of clear contact paper over the leaf person and we pressed down the paper especially around the edges. We then hung our people in a tree in the front yard. We have had fun watching them dance in the breeze (and snow). You can also tape them in the window or put them on a nature table.
I look forward to hearing what others have done.

Nonsense! I'm always amazed to hear from you northern gals that are already getting snow! When Paula said her autumn decorations looked funny under a blanket of snow, I ! I bet they do!!! I forget that you guys have fall in September while we're still in summer!

I was looking at this book the other day at Amazon. I would love to see if our library has it because it sounds so neat!

We've also done this with tissue paper. Let the kids tear pieces of colored tissue paper and make pictures on one sheet of contact paper. Cover with the second sheet. Hang it in the window - gives a nice stained glass effect.
