My dd is in fifth grade. We have always done unit studies and have started the Prairie Primer this year. We just finished the first book of the primer and quite honestly I did not think it would end. I found it very slow moving and not really a lot of meat. We have done most to all of the suggestions each week, one of the benefits of having an only child, but it still seemed to drag. I am ready to change to a different study but my dd said she has enjoyed it.
Would you keep pressing on or should I follow my feeling and change? Does it get better as it progresses through the other books? Am I missing something? I love Little House and the books but this unit is not for me. How can I excite my child if I am bored?
Thanks

Well, just my first thought, never using the Prairie Primer myself...if your daughter enjoyed it, keep it up. This is for her benefit Maybe that's too simplistic of an answer? (It's certainly not meant to offend or sound judgmental as short answers typed can sometimes seem.)

My inclination with something that one of my dd enjoys but I don't feel terribly interested in and feel could use more 'meat' would be to continue using it but to look for interesting enrichment material to add or areas that would be fun to focus on (ie to rabbit trail).
Something I always do when planning out my year is simply to check the library and house for additional books that might go along with what we are studying. (history in other parts of the world, other historical novels, material from the adult's section for me, further science material, Saint's books, biographies, other activity books .....).
We never actually use all the books as part of formal study but the adult books engage my interest and the other books increase the chance of in depth study or rabbit trails.

Ahhh, I see what you mean! Hmmm, my dd LOVES Little House, but I've never done unit studies with it. I did read a blog http://schoolathome.blogspot.com/2005/01/little-house-on-pra irie-lesson-plan.html once when I was considering unit studies on Little House. I didn't want to put forth the money on the Prairie Primer at the time. Maybe that helps? You could do a Google search for ideas?
Just brainstorming. Hope you don't mind...
God bless,
Christine
