Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have been persusing CHC's website, and I have found the information listing the items needed for each grade level. I am specifically looking at K and 1st grades.

I am concerned that if I order the plans, (and the math/phonics/religion items listed), I will then be confronted with an additional list of books and resources I need, because I obviously don't have access to a library, and would need to have all those resources on hand.

So is the curiculum good to go? What else would I need? Does anyone have a booklist of recommended books? Thanks in advance.

Katie,
No time to answer in specifics but I did want to let you know that CHC is in the final stages of getting the new catalog finished and a new webpage up.

Exciting!

The paper catalogue has an exact list of what is needed for each level. Some items are listed for several years in a row and may be supplementary one year and a core item another year, so read the descriptions carefully.

There are always devotional type stories included, but CHC leaves it up to the mother to choose literature. You can use the library, or www.sonlight.com or www.readingyourwaythroughhistory.com or Emmanuel books or Bethelehem books for suggestions for read alouds. Oh! Elizabeth Foss has a great K-8 cycle of literature suggestions in her book Real Learning, too.

Well, I shall have to peruse some more! My problem is I don't have a library, and anything I order takes a minimum of six weeks to get here, so my natural fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants approach really doesn't work. Maybe I should order the plans, get a feel for them, and then decide what to do about the extras, literature etc. If it is really open, i could simply FIAR, or mybe choose a couple of history or geography topic to cover in readalouds/picture books. On the other hand, if there are suggestions in the plans, it might be nice to have those on hand.

Am I making this way more complicated than I need to?

Katie,
you'll be happy to know that most of the FIAR books are included in the CHC literature selections, but not the ideas. So you can safely include FIAR ideas with CHC selections.

CHC is not so overwhelming that you cannot do both.

If time or shipping costs are not too much of an issue, then looking over the lesson plans first is probably the best plan. There were a few extras that I regretted not buying the first time I ordered some LP's from CHC, and a few things I was glad I didn't buy when I saw how little they were used.

I love FIAR. I think it would be a perfect way to add literature to CHC. A few years ago, I bought a bunch of the FIAR books at a reduced price by using buy.com. I don't know if its still cheaper, but it might be worth a look.

I really do appreciate your thoughts. I've been using FIAR for about 4 years now, so except for a couple of OOP titles, I have them all. I really started looking into CHC as a way to provide a sort of Catholic spine to it all. We have a Catholic church here with an English service, but depending on the priest, the accent can be so strong that it may as well not be. The children are good and don't complain too much about Mass, even though there is really very little in it for them. Having said that, it is a good reminder that the Eucharist is what is "in it for them", and that all the great music, the insightful homily, the beautiful architecture, are really just icing on the cake and make it more enticing, but that is not the point. We could have easily ended up in neighbouring Azerbaijan which has no Catholic church at all.

We do what we can at home, but I felt that something was "missing", and the posts about "How Catholic is your homeschool?" really got me thinking. I will go ahead and order the plans, and see what I think. If I don't like them, Cathswap here I come!!

You know, when I first read your post, I thought, "Why aren't there any libraries in Georgia?" It took me a minute to figure out that you meant *that* Georgia!

If you are looking for a Catholic FIAR, then I would say that the Rabbit Trails forum here is probably the best place to get ideas. Also, if you aren't sure you will use the entire CHC lesson planner, there are TONS of ideas for bringing the faith into your home in A Year With God, which CHC also sells. That book, along with the ideas here on A Living Faith are more than most people could do in years of homeschooling. I can't tell from your post if it is the literature or the Catholic workbooks that interest you in CHC. I honestly think their additions (like the first communion prep or the bible timeline in the first grade planner) are what makes CHC a gem, rather than their daily plans for using Faith and Life or "Who Am I."

just a meager .02. Hope this helps!

I have also started looking at Catholic curricula and their providers.

It looks to me like you pay a certain price to have access to their teachers and lesson plans, but you still have to buy the actual materials or curriculum components separately. Is this right?
