Sometimes I worry that, since we are not financially able to buy every book I see recommended or to sign the children up for every extra curricular activity that they might enjoy, I am failing them.
Yet, as I looked at my DS playing together today, as we all anticipate the coming of our baby, and as I recalled the time that we share together, something became crystal clear to me- we may not be financially capable of living a life of luxury, but my children are granted the luxury of TIME almost every day of their lives.
Time to be creative. Time to develop a loving relationship with one another. Time to read and play and discover the individuals that God intends them to be. Time to be a family. Time to ponder the important lessons of life. Time to welcome this new baby.
We also make time for lessons, but it is the time for all of the other things of life that I value so greatly. The luxury of time is not easy to come by in this fast paced world we live in. I am so happy to be able to give and to share this luxury with my children. I intend to focus on the benefits of this time, while we have it. Time truly is a gift.
May you all enjoy the time with your children this year.

Oh, I totally agree, Tracey! I'm finding that it takes courage to carve out the kind of time you describe. Everyone else seems to be moving at the speed of light, and it takes confidence to say, "that speed is not the best way for us."
But it's *so* worth it!
Great timing on posting this-- I'm sure I'm not the only one looking at all the fall offerings through my city parks & rec, homeschool co-ops, etc, and wondering.... "should we?"
My goal for this year is to give my kids space and time to learn. Lots of it. Unscheduled, unhurried. And I completely agree with you- that kind of luxury is hard to come by these days.

I recently read the post on Jen Mack's blog about how she has "jealously guarded" her family's time at home this summer.
I love that idea- jealously guarding the precious time we have to spend at home with our families.
The years that our dc are children seem to fly by. I don't want to spend them in the car.

Tracey, your thoughts on time are so beautiful! There is nothing more precious in life than the kinds of moments you shared in your post.
The reading from two Sundays ago made this reference to time...Eph. 5:15-16 "Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of the time..." The Navarre Commentary has this to say about those verses;
When a person's life is coherent with his faith, true wisdom is the result; and this immediately leads him to "make the most of the time" ("redeeming the time" in the famous words of the King James version)..."Redeeming the time", St. Augustine explains, "means sacrificing when the need arises, present interests in favour of eternal ones, thereby purchasing eternity with the coin of time"...The word kairos, translated as time, has a more specific meaning in Greek. It refers to the content of the point in time in which we find ourselves, the situation which it creates, and the opportunities which that very moment offers as regards the ultimate purpose of this life. Hence, "making the most of the time" is saying much more than "not wasting a minute": it means "using every situation and every moment" to give glory to God. For "time is a treasure that melts away", Monsignor Escriva remings us. "It escapes from us, slipping through our fingers like water through the mountain rocks. Tomorrow will soon be another yesterday. Our lives are so very short. Yesterday has gone and today is passing by. But what a great deal can be done for the love of God in this short space in time!"
As homeschooling families we have such blessed opportunities for "redeeming the time" by loving our families, sharing time well spent! May all your times together give glory to God and fill your hearts to overflowing with love of God and one another!

Thank you for sharing your reflections, it is so true- time surely is a gift.
This time last year, we were starting our homeschooling venture and I was watching my then 5, not-quite-4 and 2 year old playing in our yard. And I was so thankful that, in homeschooling them, I was giving them to the time to play, to be children, to build up our domestic church. The bond between them was so inspiring, actually, it made me want another child to share it with. And we welcomed our fourth baby in June :)
