And, by stuff I mean work that the kids have done.
I have been using Seton, so I have report cards. I have so many workbooks over the last three years for three kids.
The public schools only keep report cards. So, I am thinking that is all I am really bound to keep as a homeschooler, but I am not sure.
Anyone have any light so shed on the subject?

It may vary by state, but a friend of mine asked the "umbrella school" we are reviewed by, and they said to keep work from the last year (and of course anything else you like from before that), so that is what we are doing now. I keep favorites, and much of the last years work.

Well, I've only been homeschooling for a year (and just my older dd, but I'm homeschooling both this year), but my dd 9 was in public for 4 years before then and dd 7 for 2 years. When they were in public, I kept one favorite per month, and report cards.
For homeschooling, I kept a little bit more, but not much. Since dd was older, I was able to put most things in a 2 inch binder with page protectors and binders for the different subjects.

it's going to vary by state according to the laws.
Homeschool Laws by State
But after you consider what's required.. you may still want to keep a sample of the students work to prove if ever there came a need what level of work they're doing.

Jodie, I have been to that link and for CA, it tells what you need to to in order to homeschool, but not what to keep.
It has been pointed out to me that Seton does say that the lesson book and the report cards is all that is required to keep.
I was thinking with the report cards is a sample of what they have done. That should be sufficient, I hope. :)

I have so many workbooks, too! I have never made the time to go through them and take out some samples to keep. I really need, too! I am homeschooling 4 kiddos now and the boxes of old school book is only growing! LOL

I also try to think of it in this way -- what do the non-homeschool schools keep? They don't keep the workbooks, etc. They keep records of attendance and grades. Practically everything else is sent home to parents. If the public school with their stricter reporting requirements doesn't need everything, I should be safe with my computerized records and samples of work for every year.
