Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I guess that is what I will have to do starting in late August. I will be driving my MIL to radiation 5 days a week for 6 weeks in the morning. I am panicking a little wondering how I'm going to manage school with a toddler, 1st, 3rd, and 5th grader while the 7th and 9th graders stay home. Any tips or ideas, please?

Thank you so much.

Oh, my.That does sound like a difficult situation. No tips, but just wanted to say that I'm sure the Lord will bless your efforts whatever they may be, for being such a devoted daughter in law.

I'd do a lot of "listening to literature", with narrations after each chapter. If the 3rd and 5th grader are focusing on the same historical eras, it would be perfect.

We have had to do a little "car schooling" in the past, and I got the kids cheap bookbags (that they loved) and packed their math and some workbook type stuff.

We also did, as Paula said, literature outloud and discussion and narration.

I printed out little daily planners and gave them to the kids to check off things as they got them done---the 3rd and 5th grader could do this while you spend a little time with the 1st grader.

I am sure God will bless you for your great generosity and service to your MIL--the most important thing that your children will learn during this time is compassion and the importance of family, and taking care of others, especially within a family.

I second (or third) the audio books for the car and for sure narrations if you can fit them in. Will also offer up prayers for your MIL during her treatment, what a beautiful witness to our faith you and your children will be for her

Hmm... car bags, I have some thoughts, more later

Many blessings,

If you are doing any foreign language CDs car time could be good for that.

We spent January through June caring for my MIL who had cancer. We brought workbooks along, played flashcard games, and listened to audio books. We spent a lot of time in the oncologists waiting room and the other patients and caregivers really enjoyed seeing the kids. Several of them would do flashcards with my kids or watch my 3yo if I had to go to see my MIL.(because of the toxic nature of chemo/radiation kids younger than 12? can't go back near the procedure room.) You'll end up seeing the same folks every day so if they are a friendly bunch you'll be in luck. Don't expect to get a lot of actual schooling done during this season of your life. While we were actually doing the caretaking I felt worried and guilty about the kids and how much they were getting done in school. Now looking back at the time I'm grateful we dropped our schooling expectations because it was such a short time and there really was nothing more important than taking care of her while we could.

I went through this, in a way, with my dad, last fall. He was gravely ill in FL, and I had to be there, from MI. I ended up buying a portable dvd player and invested in a few educational videos, renting the rest from our library, which is very generous with 3 week rentals for any educational video/materials.

When we were in the car, they watched the videos or listened to cd's. I was honestly too stressed with driving and my dad's condition to be able to play the fun quiz games we normally do on trips when dh is with us.

Since they had to sit so much during the day, I made sure we got lots of walks and "vigorous" playtime in when we weren't at the hospital.

If there is a table you all can sit at while your mil is having her treatments, that would be great for getting some of the seatwork done. My dad was in the hospital, so in between our morning visits to him, we would go to the cafeteria and commandeer a table for learning. (Our afternoon breaks were taken at the beach. )

Now with the youngest one, I don't know that I have much to offer, as my youngest had just turned 4 before all this happened.

I will send my prayers for your mil and your family.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I know it can be hard to do this, but you can do so many things.

Have your ever played the alphabet game? You start at A and work towards Z by finding letters on the signs. Each sign is used only once. You call out the word that you found the letter in. Go get some maps of the US (like the placemat ones) and then on your way tick off the license plates you find from cars. Those are just a couple things we did as kids in the car. I also find car bingo at a teacher supply store. You can do signs and such. No need for tokens b/c it is a slide screen to cover up what you found.

Did you know that there is a book on
Carschooling ? I have it and have met her as well. Great lady and full of information.

there was also this one . I have never seen this one, but thought it would be neat.

Sounds like your kids will be learning a lot about sacrificial giving by watching you model selfless charity- surely the Lord will bless you for your generosity, Ruth! I give a big thumbs up to the audio books ideas. Give yourself permission for school to look less intense during the time you'll be taking your MIL to radiation- 6 weeks is not that long for them to go without a subject or two (or four!) when family circumstances dictate that need. Hugs, Ruth!
