Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I dreamed of doing my own thing based on Charlotte Mason, and then I chickened out. My ds is doing K this year and I bought CHC. I love it. It provides me a great outline that I can follow as closely or as loosely as needed in the moment. I love that I will have themes for each week/month. In the past, we have really gone to town with great books using themes. Instead of reinventing the wheel, I am wondering if there have been discussions of booklists based on CHC. I did a quick search but didnt come up with anything.

I don't know if you have Catholic Mosaic, but it works great with CHC's K! I would try that first. We used CHC for K as well. It was great! Try looking at Elizabeth Foss' book Real Learning for book ideas, she has a great book list. Last year for 1st grade we decided to do a Farm theme for our books. You could easliy do this with a kinder. We read aloud Charlotte's Web and then The Farmyard People from Yesterday's Classics. For more reinforcment of his handwriting we did the Draw Write Now farm animals book. It was nice because I counted that as art too. Along with James Harriot's picture books we had a blast! Good luck!
God bless,
Cheryl

I just wanted to reply and say thank you for posting this. It is exactly our situation, and I'm hoping that you get some great feedback.

Thank you, Cheryl for your suggestion. Following Catholic Mosaic is a great suggestion that I will definitely do. However, I was hoping to get more suggestions based on the CHC themes. For instance week one is mammals.   The read aloud list based on those themes is not very extensive and we have already read most all that are on it for the year. If I look at the “year at a glance” page, I can find other themes that might make for interesting book searches. For example, in September, we can do Michelangelo, God/Trinity, Prayer, courtesy, besides mammals. I just thought somebody somewhere would have done all those book searches already. But maybe not and even so, maybe it is better to do more like you did with “farm” and just pick another theme to go alongside all of our CHC. I suppose it could be America or our state or just about anything -whatever rabbit trails we find ourselves on. I would love some feedback on this.
And Andrea, will you let me know what you are thinking and what grade you are doing.

I don't remember seeing anything like you are describing. I think I would have bookmarked or otherwise saved it if I had. Fwiw, the CHC first grade has exact book suggestions for every theme, so if you like CHC, you won't have to come up with anything for the next year.

I would look at the themes and find books on my shelf that would fit well and then fill in with other books from either Catholic Mosaic or Elizabeth's lists, and write them on the lesson plans.

Sorry I didnt write this clearly. My ds is kindergarten, but i am using the CHC first grade for him. The "book" list or as they call it, "read aloud" list for each theme in first grade is the one I was referring to. We have read most all of them and I would like to make it more extensive. If I come up with ideas, I will try to post them, but I am not very good about typing book titles and linking them as others do. If there is a secret to doing that easily, pls let me know! Gotta go my dd (just turned 4) just wrote her name!! I never taught her and didnt know she knew how!!!!

No need to link. You can just list titles and people will happily cut and paste to their own computers!

I have a child doing CHC 1st this fall. I subbed books that I own for some of the ones listed and added in Catholic Mosaic as well for some of them. It only took maybe an hour or two to alter it. I guess it depends on how many extras you want to add.

The CHCchat yahoo group has some science book suggestions in the file.

I added a bit of history (Mary Daly's First Timeline) and classic children stories to my grade one read alouds since my dd was ready for more the picture books.
