Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We do alot of "traveling" on Sunday and are hooked on "books on tape".   We also listen during meals. I would love more recommendations.

Our suggestions are:
Little House on the Prairie Series read by Cherry Jones (they just came out with the Long Winter which we just started and they are expected to have the next book out this summer 2005)

Chronicles of Narnia (Harper Children's Audio)

A Canticle for Leibowitz (this is Science Fiction with a Catholic setting and probably more for older children and adults but it was very interesting, I'm not a sci-fi fan either)

Tolkein's Hobbit and LOTR read by Rob Inglis

Tolkein's Silmarilion read by Martin Shaw (I highly recommend a Tolkein dictionary along with this and it is more geared for older children and adults but ever so fascinating if you like the Hobbit and LOTR)

I'm interested in the Little Britches series but they are very expensive, I hope our Library system has them.

Any other ideas?

Julie

Julie, we love books on tape or CD. I have several web pages with recommendations (url below signature, click on "audio" at top). Our current listen is Great Expectations.

Our library has a pretty good selection of audio tapes, but I have a personal collection that rivals it . They are a great way to solve the problem of wasted car time, as you know, and they are also great when we are cleaning the house--no one wanders out of the room and "forgets" to come back .

We recently enjoyed Mr. Revere and I, as told by his horse--it was a fun listen!

Just wondering how you incorporate them into the car-time; most of our car rides are pretty short, 10-20 min long, other than vacations. Doesn't it get confusing to be starting/stopping so frequently? Also, if I'm in the car without the kids, I don't want to get ahead, but if I change CD's to listen to, I lose the place (that's one advantage of cassettes over CD's)
I used to listen to a lot of books on tape when I walked for exercise, but sadly, my exercise time has disappeared, and so has my listening time!

We just do alot of starting and stopping. We listen during breakfast and lunch and I just write on the calendar where we left off (disk 2, track 1), in the car *most of the time* it will stay at the same place til we get back in again, though. (I agree about that advantage of cassettes over CD's I like CD's for educational and tapes for listening) LOL picky, picky! I have listened to the same passage several times before everyone got to listen but oh well!

Don't forget that Blackstone Audio (www.blackstoneaudio.com) will sell you the tapes at 50% off if you call in your order and tell them you homeschool -- they have pretty good prices anyway, but this makes it REALLY good! We use them when we do the long haul drive from SC to CO each summer....

Blessings all --

Oh, our car time varies, but the CD player bookmarks the track, the tape player, or course, stops at the right time . If I am in the car alone, I listen to the classical radio station, or a tape if I need to keep a CD bookmark.

Also, Since I use my Pocket PC to listen to Audible downloads, and that bookmarks for me, there is no problem there.

Many of our car rides are under 20 minutes. We usually just put the radio on for that time, but if we are in the car for over 20 minutes, a tape or CD will fill in the time.

Good point!

I always say, "When in doubt (as to the quality of a recording), go with Blackstone." Many of their recordings are available for download at even better prices, and the quality is always great.

Audible is a download service--that's their niche. If you bought The Song of Bernadette, you may downoad it any time, burn it onto a CD, play it from the computer, or transfer it to a mobile device. They save the cost of keeping and shipping hard copies, and pass the savings onto their customers.

The Freddy the Pig/Freddy the Detective series is hilarious on tape/CD by Walter R. Brooks. I'm not crazy about reading them outloud, but on tape with the different voices my husband and I enjoy listening to them on long trips as much as the kids do. Lots of good vocabulary words too. We listened to Freddy goes to the North Pole at Christmas time and Freddy the Politician around election time. Talked about the whole election process!

Ok, I'm going to expose my computer ignorance-so I can purchase a "download", it downloads onto my computer and then I can put a CD-ROM in the CD drive and then have the book on a CD I can play in the car??
Thanks!

Yes, Jennifer...If you have a CD burner on your computer, you just have to download the Audible Manager software (free). Julie is right, though. With dial-up it takes a loooong time to download.
