okay.
let's say you couldn't use the internet or the library (but you have a printer!)
what non consumable (or nearly so) curriculum items, materials, or whatever would you invest in to insure you could homeschool for K - 12th grades without having to continue buying curriculum every year?

I would buy one of those cheap workbooks (at WalMart, Sams, Staples) for the grades I was teaching. I have found them helpful for practice of concepts that need extra work. And they also can help me figure out different ways to teach something. They sometimes keep me on track for what a "whatever-grader" needs to know.
With the printer(copier?)it could become non-consumable.

The Robinson Curriculum is all on CD-ROM. You would probably want a good dictionary and math books and Catholic history/fiction to supplement or replace some of those Henty books though.
Hmm, I would probably use either Mater Amabilis or Latin-Centered Curriculum's booklists to build my library. On top of that you just need math and the catechism program of your choice.
Is this theoretical or a real-world scenario?

I'm focusing on high school since everyone has pretty much listed what I would use for grade school. This is the minimum.
Jacob's Algebra and Geometry
Henle Latin (or Wheelock's)
some type of grammar/English handbook
various Penguin classics.
Frank D'Angelo's Composition in the Classical Tradition (with objectionable sections whited out)
Science books from MacBeth's Opinion
Warren Carroll's Christendom series
Paul Johnson's history books.
The CCC plus a Bible.

I agree about the Penguin classic versions, they tend to be better versions than most!
I have no idea how I could for get MacBeths' Opinion! I used to have it bookmarked on my old computer and need to have it again now that you mention it!
who is paul johnson history books?
back on topic...

oh no, let's presume real world scenario!
The reason I ask is because dh and I were talking with some other homeschoolers about pros and cons of homeschooling on the cheap. It doesn't happen often, but 3 times in the last 9 years I've had a major issue with technology not being as reliable or affordable as I would need. A computer crash, with all my notes and free downloads. Purchase of a new computer meaning old software didn't work or needed to be repurchased because the license was only for one computer use. So, much as I love technology, it doesn't always love me and I'm hesitant to base an entire curriculum on it. Then there's the cost of money to copy/print and the time involved. For example, there's no way I could print an entires year of math for the cost of one MCP mathematics workbook.
And my dh pointed out the cheapest thing to do is use what we have and make sure what we have is quality that is non-consumable or nearly so.
So that got me thinking...
If you only bought according to that guideline, what would you buy?

I haven't read all of the other replies yet....
Editor in Chief Editor in Chief from Critical Thinking (in fact, they have many great resources)!
Audio Memory Resources (Grammar Songs ex.)- Grammar Songs, Geography Songs, History Songs- etc.
Winston Grammar- this is good, there is a student book to buy seperately, but sometimes I typed out the sentences so I could use it again.
Write with the Best- LOVE this for writing!!
If I think about more, I'll come back and post. I'm sure everyone will give you great resources!!! I can't imagine not having the internet or library for learning! But there are options still to keep costs lower.

Oh man! Now I have angst!!! I know I love it, and I hope you do too. I can tell you that when our oldest took his SAT, he got an average essay score. After he did the Persuasive Essay unit over 10 days in volume 2 of Write with the Best, his score improved 3 points! I was pleased with that.
I love how it uses real pieces of literature to show you the different types of writing. And I love how it's all scheduled out by days, so it helps with planning.
Tracy
