Just wondering if anyone is venturing down any new rabbit trails they'd like to share?? We had a wonder Advent with Jan Brett and Scandinavian studies and are looking for some new trails to follow. Thanks for any ideas and sharing!

Well, we are in holiday mode right now, as my three older sons are here from interstate.
I was thinking, when they leave, that maybe we could do a journalling/drawing/scrapbooking thing - recording our great holiday memories and tying in some thoughts of 2005 and wishes for 2006.

First, I AM going to finish the Tomie de Paola lapbooks  .
Then, we are going to begin to work on Blessed Mother notebooks. We are going to do a a page or two for each of the titles of Our Lady. I'd like to make ornaments like the ones on the Our Lady of Guadalupe thread and I'm planning a field trip for a tour of National Shrine of the IMmaculate Conception. I think this will be a great project for inspiring a devotion to Our Lady and also for learning about other cultures...
I'll post as I go on the Living Faith forum.

This year I'm taking a self-interest in Emily Dickinson and am still studying fairy tales.
Kayleigh...hmmmm. I really don't know. Need to have a teatime with her soon. 
Garrett wants to research more on JFK. (Does anyone know any excellent books for children on him?)
Chelsea is still big into horses. I saw that Amanda Bennett was coming out with a new unit study on horses so that might be on order soon.  She also loves Emily Dickinson so I'll include her in some of my findings. And she loves fairy tales and is busy writing her own.
Annie loves anything as long as she's included. 
I would so love my dc and I to do one project together but need to regroup myself to see how to fit one more thing into our already booked school time and these individual pursuits (which I really do want to encourage). Right now I think it would be too much and don't dare jump into something I can't finish.
Sonya Roman of RC History shared with the FCL group something she and her dc did one year. They had a Shakespearean Summer. Now that's something I feel like I could whip together by summertime. And we could do that all summer without having any other commitments.
That's the plan anyway.

Cay, my dd Candace is really into horses right now as well. Where would I find the Amanda Bennet unit on horses? When I went to check on my dd after she went to bed, she was working on one of her many drawings of horses. She just finished reading "Dreamer" and really enjoyed it.

Okay, I didn't look before I asked. I just googled Amanda Bennet and found her website. I also see she's going to have a unit on the Winter Olympics! My kids loved our study of Greece and the summer olympics a couple of summers ago. I'm really looking forward to a study of Italy.
This week we are FINALLY going to make a volcano. We haven't done anything related yet, but they've been asking for so long, I decided to lay aside my plans and go with it! So, we'll be reading about volcanos and making one by the end of the week. Any good read alouds or picture books about volcanos?

Volcanos always seem to lead to the city of Pompeii. We studied this years ago when my oldest was grammar age. He heard the pastor mention the city of Pompeii during the homily one Sunday, turned to my dh and said, "Hey, Fr. knows about that city too."

Yes! It was a wonderful movie and my dd loved it.
Pompeii study would be great. I remember going to an exhibit one year in 6th grade. It was so fascinating! Thanks!

There's a webcam on Mt. Vesuvius. (Not that much happens right now, but still!)

This site is cool, but there are some parts that are only in Italian. PM me if you need some translation help. I think you will be able to figure out most of the captions easily (get out that Latin dictionary!).
And (shameless brag alert) you can read a little about Vesuvio, as written by yours truly, here: Nancy's article on Vesuvio
Check out the link on page 4 to Vesuvioinrete. (It's the final link on the page.) There you'll find some great info and wonderful photos.
Maybe we should start a separate Italy thread? I'm glad to help with an Italy study; we've lived there twice. Rome, Venice, and Florence are great, but there's so much more to Italy than the big, famous cities. Each region has wonderful food, special religious sites, amazing scenery, etc.

Wow, you all are off to a great start! It looks like we're venturing to the Arctic for a few weeks. Anyone done a recent Arctic unit, I'll probably springboard off the FIAR book, Very First Last Time. Happy trails!

We did an arctic unit in the fall and started with Very Last First Time. One book we really enjoyed was By Truck to the North. The author travels with a truck driver into the arctic circle delivering needed items to the residents.
Caribou Journey was also a hit.
We also looked at the Antarctic and enjoyed Trapped by the Ice: Shackleton's Amzing Antarctic Adventure (by Michael McCurdy).
Hope your family enjoys this unit together.

Did I say we were doing it this week ? I've been a little scattered lately but we're going to the library tomorrow and getting lots of books on volcanos, Pompeii, etc. so we can be fully prepared for our Volcano project!

Hi. We just did a read aloud of Mr. Popper's Penguins. My kids loved it. My ds(8) has been inspired to try to write a sequel to the story. What a blessing! He hates to read and write but is so into this project. He is narrating and I am writing it but it is his ideas. It is fun to see him so excited. Plus we are also learning about more about the Artic and Antartic and explorers of those areas also. So I think this qualifies as rabbit trails.
We also hope to get more into the Olympics also so I am thinking about the unit study mentioned here.

We are slowly heading down the penguin trail-we've seen March of the Penguins three times since November and are working our way through some penguin library books-I have this one on hold at the library-I hope it's worth the wait. We also (finally) finished Mr. Popper's Penguins. I'm hoping to do some sort of penguin/artic/antartic lapbook or notebook but I'm not sure how to go about it.

Having unseasonably warm temperatures in TX this month made me look for winter in our books. We are finishing up a unit on Snowflake Bentley. What a great book!
