This sounds like Cindy's topic but it's a bit different....

I know Cindy keeps an idea notebook. I wanted to ask HOW and IF you unschoolers plan ahead and prepare. Do you just jot down ideas and booklists for the future? Does anyone have rough ideas of what they want to work on with their kids *sometime* before they move out?

Things to strew? That kind of thing? I would love specifics, even if what you do is very informal or kept in your head!

A lot of this is kept in my head and is fluid, Willa.

A lot of my ideas of "what to do before they leave home" are also enclosed in some articles that I keep on my computer, or in a file, or in books, about education and families and Catholicism and unschooling. I re-read and peruse these and am always on the lookout for new ideas.

Last year, I thought I'd look at ideas each month and strew. I was going to use some of Cay's House of Literature ideas.

This lasted a month. Life ( and learning) got in the way.

I guess, mentally, I see the importance of Maths, of reading, of writing, of many varied experiences, of sharing and living and knowing the Faith, of work skills, of human relationship skills.

I also have have the idea of university for my sons, in the back of my mind. ( I think my mind sounds cluttered.

)

I think these mental "plans" colour some of what I strew and share.

Sounds very ad hoc and the "planning" changes from season to season, from term to term.

I hope someone else replies because I fear that my answer has been less than clear and thus less than helpful!

Leonie, that IS along the lines of what I was wondering.
As usual, your answers are evocative and communicate a lot with only a few words. I wish I could do that!!

I also wanted to add that I keep my children's current passions in my mind and look for strewing ideas there. I do the same for my dh, too!

For example, I know that Jonathon is into art and music and film so keep an eye on any interesting tidbits etc for him.

For Alexander, it is anything mathematical and musical.

For Thomas - fantasy and sci fi.

Greg and Luke - history and literature.

And so it goes through the seven boys. And dh.

That's been my main focus throughout this fall. Which in our family leads to Teaching Company tapes (for DH), musicals (for DH and DD), football (for middle dss) and dinosaurs and other science-type stuff for younger ds.

We have little extra money, so one big resource for this homeschool has been the county library system.

I have found that paying attention to what the family interests are and helping build on them keeps me in tune with them (a BIG thing for me!) and besides, is fun.
