I've been contemplating adding this into our school for a long while now, but never quite managed to do it.   We've been needing something new and fresh added to our routine, and I think my children, who love to draw, would enjoy having main lesson books.

My question is, how many should I get? Do I get one per subject? Or will they need more than that? Or one per unit study?

I just bought one in every color and we figured it out later

I let dd sort of match up subjects and colors- she picked green for sciency stuff and purple for the liturgical year etc.

She chooses her own thems and titles- I think right now she has a "big world", "words words words", "math journal" "my holy year" and "science notebook"
going.

She fills them up as she likes- if she write a poem about birds she might choose to do it her "science notebook" or her "words words words" one.

We tend towards being unschooly so she usually fills them on her own but if she needs something to do I will do a chalkboard for copywork or suggest something.

We have friends that use one for each new thing as you said and others that just use the same one till its full.

Its one of those whatever works for you things-
you could make a couple of books with your dc by folding and stiching paper to try it out before you buy a bunch-its fun and easy but i do like keeping a bunch on hand.

One thing though - keep them seperate from a big box of doodle type scratch paper the dc know the books are for special work and the scratch paper is for brainstorming or play.

I think I saw a post on Katherine's blog, Evlogia, and liked that hers had lines on 1 side and blank on the other side to draw pictures on...

But I'm unsure of where to start looking at these things...

I was wondering the same thing Emily.   Thanks for asking! I'm also wondering how often people have their children make an entry in their main lesson books? The examples I've seen on line make me want to have my kids do every assignment (well, maybe not a Saxon math page!) in a Main Lesson book. But that's probably not realistic.
One thought I did have was to have my kids decorate several pages in their notebooks during art time. Then, when it was time to do copywork or whatever they would have a beautiful page to put their work on.
I'm still trying to decide how I want to do this. I think the whole idea is wonderful and certainly a way to add beauty to our every day work around here.

Target recently had heavy duty bound notebooks like the marbled black and white ones I remember from school. The interior pages have both space to draw and lines to write. I know somewhere I saw an online tutorial (maybe Dawn?) about covering them in pretty paper. I am hoping some of the children can personalie the covers.

Rainbow Resource has some lovely main lesson books - different sizes (8*11 or 12*12) - sold in multipacks. Much cheaper than the Waldorf suppliers and good thick quality of paper. We used them 2 years ago - every child had different colors.

Our walmart has those same marbled black/white ones with space on the top for drawing and lines underneath. We use those for copywork and really like them!

Marilyn, thanks for the tip on rainbow resource. I just put a small order in with the Paper, Scissors, Stones, but now I'll know I can get them cheaper elsewhere! :)

And for anyone interested, the Paper, Scissors, Stone did have some in their clearance/sale page...just one size that they had the wrong color in, so I just ordered several of those since they were cheaper!

Oh, and CONGRATULATIONS, Marilyn...what are you doing on the computer so soon?!?! LOL! Your new little one is beautiful!!

Another idea is to have them do drawings, work, ect. on nice paper (all the same kind) and then at the end of the year you can take them to Staples and have them spiral bound. (Also you can take the back of a sketch book and cover it in nice scrapbook paper for the cover.

I like this idea! We own a comb binder, so this is very doable. That way, my perfectionist doesn't flip out over messing up in his book.

Years ago when my older children were enrolled in Calvert School, they would make a monthly "book". For each month, they would design a seasonal cover, and then at the end of the month all of their papers would be placed in order behind the cover and "bound"-either with yarn, staples, or I suppose you could even do a comb binding. The advantage to this method is that their work is done in chronological order and they (and you!) can see their progress; also, you never run out of paper or use just part of a book and waste the rest. The disadvantage is that the subjects/units aren't separated, but are all mixed together. Maybe a modified approach to this would work. Basic school work pages (math, worksheets of various kinds, writing practice, etc.) could go in a monthly self-bound book, and unit type materials could go in a similarly constructed unit book at the end of the unit (such as a "Seashore" book for us on our next planned unit, containing all the copywork, drawings, experiment descriptions, maps, or whatever we do for that unit bound together with a seashore drawing on the front). I like the idea of binding it together at the end, too, Emily, because that way it's so easy to re-do "messed-up" work, or just choose their best work to be included. This would help with my special needs son, too, because he sometimes is on his own unique program and doesn't quite follow the instructions for a given project (like he'll color the whole map with markers before I can stop him and tell him to only color the country we are studying; other times, he'll just starting drawing helicopters in his book!).

Ah, this gives me a different perspective. Thanks Caroline! I was originally thinking along the lines of 1 for history, 1 for Science, 1 for Copywork, etc. It was getting overwhelming. I guess my "ducks in a row" personality was thinking everything had to be "filed" in it's own subject book. But really, part of the charm of my dad's scrapbook is that there is a bit of everything in there. Even pages on which he had written his times tables.
Now I'm seriously considering the idea of having seasonal books instead of one for each subject or one for each month. Maybe one for the beginning of school, one for the holiday season (Thanksgiving - Christmas), one for Winter, and one for Spring or Lent/Easter.

Main Lesson book question-
Do kids "practice" their drawing and/or written narrations first on scrap paper and then do a final copy in the MLB? All the samples I've seen online look so nice.
