We started the first week of August, so I guess we can technically call it quits anytime.
But we all know that real learning never ends, and I am reluctant to have an official "last day" of school, thinking my ds won't want to step foot back in our learning room for the rest of the summer.
Or is it better to have that "last day" and give them closure?
They have worked hard and faithfully all year.

Today is our last day! I told the girls they needed to finish their Math chapters and we would be done. They did 3 days of Math today.  And in record time.

We actually just drop things come the beautiful spring weather. We're pretty relaxed around here so there are no definitive lines, except finishing a math book. We start up again when the kids start whining about the heat!

Same as Molly- we just let things drop off naturally as soon as the sun starts shining. So we're pretty much done now and won't start back up till October . I take pains to make sure 'school' and 'life' aren't separated, so I think if I said, "school's out!" my kids would be somewhat confused. But I do tell my dd "you're a 2nd grader now!" So I guess she feels like she *finishes* a grade at some point.

Well, with the frequency with which we move (  ), we usually stop around now to pack up and get ready ....
Actually, we never STOP, but we are backing off after today so that I can get the kids to actually HELP pack and sort so we can move at the end of June (God willing!). We've "clocked" over 37 weeks of school ... but as I said, we never stop ... just slow down or take a break for a bit

I am so happy you *are* moving and the house in CO is finally moving on to a new owner. Three offers on the same day.... sounds like the Father, Son and Holy Spirit were in on that

We do have a last day, and it's based on my syllabus.
We've been tapering off for the last month or so, and we will complete everything our curriculum suggests before the true "last day"--next Thurs. But it's really just an end to assigned seat work and memory work, and we've been doing that outside as much as possible lately. The tapering just helps it not feel so abrupt.

Things have been trickling to an end for a while now. We are still doing math daily, and will continue with that throughout the summer. I think this Friday will be our "official" end to the school year, though we still have two more science classes at our homeschool resource center.

We won't finish until sometime in August because we take a lot of breaks in the spring and fall to enjoy the nice weather. Our summers are very hot, so it is a good time to do school.

We tend to go with the public school year - not exactly, but within a week or 2 usually. Colin had finished up his 2nd/3rd grade books 6 weeks ago, and started 3rd/4th grade books -- but then decided he was ready to end the year last week, so I let him.
Nate has only one chapter left in his math book, and 2 lessons in handwriting and then he'll be done. I imagine that will happen this week.

We are ramping up for schoolwork.
We struggle through the winter, because we are stuck inside a lot, and when summer comes all energy is released and I have cooperative, loving kids.
We do relax some because everyone else seems to take the summer off, but most days we do some school.
I was thinking of limiting it to 2 subjects a day this summer--one of which will be math And then, with our "spare" time work on chores and household stuff 
I wonder how that will go over-hee hee.

PS-I wish I could just ditch school for summer but the winter issue, travels to family, family visits here and other stuff throughout the year really limit the time we do school.

We are with Krysta, We are just started our 3rd term at the beginning of May so we school all summer and end at the beginning of August.
It is just too hot to do anything other than school inside and the beach and pool (which we just found out DD is allergic to )

We're officially done June 23rd (the 24th is our anniversary and seemed like an appropriate date to start summer break). We have been slacking off due to nice weather and visits to parks. We'll start up in Sept. with our world tour via Serendipity.

Our school year has to flex around whether or not I'm having a baby (c-section), we're moving (Army), hubby's deploying (Army), and how the weather is where we live. Having said that, we all like to have a nice summer break from it all. It may be a month or two, but usually never more than two months. That allows us to take breaks throughout the school year to keep from burnout. I try to follow a quarter on, one week off, plus holidays off. Although, during the summer I chose a handful of books from Sonlight for each of the children to read during the break and for me to read aloud to them. I think this keeps the brain going and growing. :) Personally, I detest the whole "have to have your kids in school 180 days". We count "school" everyday. :)

We will be done by June 12 (if we stop taking days off to spend outside  ) except for math. We will work on that through the summer.

I have to log 180 days for NY's attendence requirement. Sometimes I'm not exactly sure how to define "present" and "absent". I guess I consider "school" whenever we're in a pattern where math is done every day, and a "break" when it isn't. Of course, I will still count some days as present in July when we're technically "off" because the kids will be spending hours playing soccer, at camps, reading, etc.
Anyway, this year I've said that we're stopping *most* of our schoolwork next week. We'll taper down to just math in June, then no math in July. I'll probably be reading about the Romans for most, if not all, of the summer. My kids don't think history or science counts as "school".

May 29th is our last day for seatwork/workbooks. I've already looked in all the books and counted the pages. How's that for a compulsive, check-off the list homeschool mom?
Amazingly, we will finish on in good timing. This is amazing in the fact we only did 3 days per week of school on average. Monday was co-op day and we were always out of the house one other day.
For summer unschooling:
* Teaching Textbook Math will continue. I won't beat them w/ the mouse pad. We'll only do 1 lesson per day @ 3 or 2 days a week. Not even every day but my poor children cannot afford to let math go unheeded for a whole summer.
* Reading...reading...reading. Yes, they must have a book going.
* We will continue our picture book studies as a family. These have grown on us and we reap so much fruit.  I'm thinking gardening and seaside books for fun and I'm looking for something regarding history. We could continue on with the explorers books. We haven't done all those but we've exhausted the Great Depression picture books.
* Nature Study...I've got very major, very detailed, and very relaxed plans for this.
* Louisiana Plans...again, very major, very detailed, and very relaxed plans for this.
We'll start school sometimes in mid-August/end-of-August or after Labor Day in Sept. Depends on when I'm ready.

Our plans are similar to Cay's. Next Friday is the last "official" day, but we will continue Math and Reading every day through the summer. OK, probably not Math every day. 3 times a week is probably more realistic. We will also be doing some Nature Studies and some Geography Studies, but I have very relaxed plans for this. We will start back after Labor Day, and next year, my middle child is joining us after being in public for Kindy and 1st grade! Yea!
Mom to DD9, DD6, and DS4 and home-based preschool teacher to 5!

We are always done by Memorial Day weekend, even though I do have the dc do a little math and the library Summer Reading Program. I just cannot bring myself to go back to the books after Memorial Day
