I've read all the discussions about their Language Lessons books, and I ended up ordering two different levels to try this fall. While I've just skimmed them, I like what I see. It kind of reminds me of PLL or ILL but in a workbook format.
They sent a catalogue along with my order, and I find myself gravitating to it a lot, in spite of my general rule to ignore new catalogues  . I noticed that in spite of them being "KJV only" protestants, she has study guides for a lot of the Bethelehem books that many of us love. And I am very intrigued by the study guides for the living nature study books, many of which I have never even heard of before.
There is a lot in that catalogue that looks gentle and appealing. Has anyone here ordered anything besides the Language Lessons for their families? If so, do you like what you bought? And if you have either a history or science study guide, what are they like and how mommy intensive are they?

I haven't done any of the study guides. We have done the Lang. Lessons this year, for my olders actually, 6th and 8th grades. The only complaint has been long sections of copywork for days on end. So I've told them to switch it up and that's worked out. I have them for the youngers too, preK and 1st and it's perfect for them.
I also ordered the Cursive books. My boys had never done a real cursive book and they really like them and did a wonderful job with them.
I'll be ordering more LL, handwriting books and I'm thinking about the a copywork book for my to-be 2nd grader for next year.
Oh and I saw in the catalog a vocabulary book and I looked at it online and it looked pretty good. So I'm pondering that. We've always done Wordly Wise, but it might be nice to change it up and add some nice art/photos along with it.
Sorry don't know anything about the guides...hopefully someone does!

We've used the study guide for My Side of the Mountain and liked it. It involves quite a bit of writing and research but many tasks could be done orally. I would not recommend it for third grade or under, though. The only drawback of the guide is that there is no answer key. You will have to read the book yourself and pay attention to the details.

I used the study guide for My Side of the Mountain and liked it alot. However, I did read the book aloud to my K, 2nd, and 5th graders (who loved it),So I was on top of the answers. It would be a pain to give it to someone to use independently if you didn't know the details of the story.

What kinds of activities are included in the guide? If I was on top of the book by reading it aloud, could they do some of the activities independently, or would they need me to be very involved?

The activities mainly involve consulting an encyclopedia or a field guide. The student has to write a summary about a certain bird or tree or research an area. The student is also asked to sketch the tree or bird. Some other activities are just discussion questions about a character or something interesting from the book. If your students know how to do research you would not have to be involved very much.
