Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I saw an ad online for South Carolina Calvert Academy. I was wondering if anyone had any info on Calvert Academies in general. We're looking to try our hand at homeschooling this summer with a Horizon's math program to help my eldest who's having some trouble with math. Depending on how things go we might homeschool full time, which is what I'd like to do but DH is hesitant, hoping this summer will convince him we can handle it. I went ahead and requested all the info from the school as well as applied and have until the 30th (of April so this month) to fill out the enrollment stuff if we decide to go that route. I figured I could apply and then just not enroll him if we decided against it but at least that way if it was a great program we'd have a spot. Anyway, B will be entering 4th grade next year and any info on Calvert would be helpful.

Thanks

The well-known Calvert Academy which most homeschoolers use is located in Maryland. I have never heard of one in South Carolina. We used Calvert (Maryland) for several years. They have a strong, private school type academic program with a lot of great classical reading. Their language arts and math programs are great. We no longer use Calvert because 1)they are not as Judeo-Christian as they used to be, 2)they added a lot of material that is just extraneous so their approach is less Charlotte-Masony and more rigorous scholastic, and 3) we have a special needs student for whom it really wasn't a good fit. Having said that, my oldest son, who spent most of his elementary years in the Calvert program, scored 1550 on his SAT's (pre-writing test), with a perfect 800 in English. I have to give Calvert (in Baltimore!) credit for that. One more thing, it's not a great fit for a larger family, as each child has a completely different curriculum.

Thank you Caroline.

The Calvert Academy here is public, it has a state certified teacher who follows the child's progress and you do the work at home/online. I wasn't sure what to make of it when I found it, but like I'd mentioned I went ahead and got his name on the list in case it was something that would be great for him and if not we could just forgo enrollment and let someone else have the spot. B will be going into 4th grade this next year and the public schools here leave a LOT to be desired, now with budget cuts and our Governor not accepting any of the stimulus money for education it's gotten worse. We were already toying with the idea of homeschooling and have gotten a Horizon's program for math to try out over the summer, and to convince DH. We aren't a large family really, but compared to my friends who only have one child we get looks. We have 3 children and the younger two are 4 and 2 years old. Thank you for the information, I appreciate it.

I found some articles on homeschooling through public school programs that might give you some general information. I didn't read these, but they looked like they covered the problems that might be associated with homeschooling through a public education program. I hope they give both pros and cons so you will be able to make an informed decision.
