I just heard through a Yahoo group that he is g** and has renounced his Catholic faith.
Does anyone know if this is true?

I've heard the first accusation before, and I think that I heard that he acknowledged it. The second accusation, I haven't heard anything about.
OK, I did a little research and his site mentions neither state. There is a biography on Educational Paperback Association that lists his religion as Roman Catholic and talks about his care in not conforming his characters to social stereotypes; his boys cook and his girls don't need men to take care of them. Also he is not married and has no children, but that could be for any number of reasons.

I've heard both rumors before. That said, I don't think it lessens his work, my enjoyment or my kids' enjoyment of his work. He was raised so steeped in the faith that his books often resound with his Catholicity ... whether he left that behind or is g** is not important, imho.

I know we've discussed this here before although I can't seem to find the conversation right now.
I think it's important we realize that even with official word on either of these issues, it will fall to personal preference as to how we respond to the information. Som of us fall quite easily into the "take the choicest part" mentality and can move forward without much concern. For others, our gut reaction and heart sense tells us this is all so sad and we need to just leave it behind. Either is an okay decision.
Whatever our presonal response, it's important that we be guided by our conscience without speculating on the state of this person's soul. We have no objective information to work with here.
So let's just be aware and be respectful of the range of opinions that are all acceptable here, and steer clear of any conversation that passes judgement on the author himself.

I met him and his "partner" at a talk/book signing at IL State Univer. about 5 years ago.
I told him that reading his books as a child had a lasting efect on me, and that they helped me to long for and eventually enter the Catholic Faith!!
We did chat for a brief moment about the beauty of the Catholic Faith, but it was strange for me to see his "friend" by his side.
he has dedicated some of his books to this partner as well.
we can keep praying for him.
I AM grateful that he continues to write about and portray the Catholic faith in a positive light.....

I agree completely. I was just surprised and curious when I read the post at the other site, and knew you ladies were the ones to come to!

Totally know how you feel...wishing you never knew.
There is another artist/illustrator (I won't mention his name because not knowing is better I think) who my children like and when I found out his background it was a bummer (but it's on his website I believe). I found myself questioning but then thought that letting the art speak for itself is a good thing. As long as that art is pure in it's intentions, then I feel like I can't second guess and try to read anything into it because I may (or maybe not?) know something "else". kwim?

do you know he signed ALL 20 of our books that I brought, plus about 8 from our local library???
I was really impressed with that. and the kids like to "check up on" those library books often!!
I do remember it really freaked dh out, when we first found out and he did not want to attend the lecture at the University, but we all ended up going as a family.
My kids do not know. I admire the way that he keeps this information from his official website, blog, etc.
He has links to a few Catholic monastery/religious orders on his site.
I remember reading up about one of them, not being in union with the Church, but the others were "good".
