Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This morning I read such a beautiful description of what it means to be connected to the ones we love. It comes from a devotional I'm using and reminded me very much of Charlotte Mason's emphasis on being alert and attentive to whatever we are doing.

"Quality presence means we have a heart of love and a desire to care for others. It means that "being with" is just as significant as "doing for." It means being willing to have nothing to show for our day's work except faithfully standing by the cross of another, or giving love in a celebrative moment, or attentive perceptive listening with our heart. This kind of presence creates peace, energy, and acceptance of another. Quality moments mean forgetting about clocks and calendars."

CM emphasizes doing things with excellence. One beautifully formed letter is better than a row of sloppy ones.

I thought about how we can be "with" our kids and never really "be" with them. This passage by Joyce Rupp really stopped me short this a.m. I felt moved to again think about the quality of presence I want to share in my family's life. (From Fresh Bread)

This is beautiful, Julie. Thank you for sharing.

I think it relates well to Charlotte Mason and her habit of attention... us to be attentive to our children and being present with them. Not constantly distracted or waiting for that 'next thing'.....

What a present if we can be really 'present'.
