Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This year we have to do standardized testing, and I just picked up the Spectrum Test Prep for 6th grade. It has a large writing section, in which students are directed to write about topics such as the influence of violence in the media, and "what do you think is the biggest problem facing world leaders today?"

Is there a writing section on the CAT for 6th grade - as in, actual essay writing and not fill-in-the-little-bubble questions?

The test prep book also has a section in which students are supposed to compare literature from different traditions, including Beowulf, A Modest Proposal, and "Ode on a Grecian Urn." "Pick one of the works, find a copy online or at the library, and read it. Compare it to something else you've read recently. What are some basic similarities and differences in the themes, plot, and language between the two works?"

Don't get me started on the social studies section. But is this really representative of the CAT for instance? (that's the one we'll use.)

I used the 6th grade CAT test from Seton 2 years ago. It was all "fill in the little bubble" questions. Maybe you can check with Seton and make sure that it is still the same.

The CAT-E tests from Seton have no social studies or science. Just language arts and math. I did use the CAT-5 test from Kolbe Academy which had science and social studies, but nothing like you mentioned above...and no writing. We didn't do any review and the kids did fine.
Hope this helps...

Angela,
We will be using the CAT for sixth grade this year as well, so I'm glad you asked this!
