Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

(1) under what circumstances, if any, is it okay to share a pdf. that you have purchased?

(2) is it okay to share recipes out of a cook-book either by posting them on a blog or chatgroup?

It's a little vague but I'm almost sure that the ingredients list can not be copyrighted for a recipe.. but that the way the directions are written can be? (that's where it gets vague).

I also have a confused idea that you can share electronic things as you would a book.. if your friend has it, then you can't have it... like I could load a program on my computer and if I take it off and let a friend use it on their computer it's ok.. but we can't use the same program on both computers at the same time.

That's what I know about recipes. Not the ingredients, but how the directions are written.

I don't know a sure answer on the .pdf. I would think no, you can't share, unless it's on loan.

I don't know the answer to your question about a .pdf. I think you could always ask the author - some documents could have a sharing copyright, or you could transfer copyrights if you were done with the .pdf.

When I have posted a recipe on my blog from a cookbook, I always credit the cookbook. However, I don't think you could legally copy the majority of recipes from a cookbook onto a blog or other site - more like a one or 2 sharing thing.

You cannot copyright the ingredient list but the directions tied to a recipe are copyrighted. If you modify the recipe, it's still appropriate to say "I modified this from Paula Deen's butter and mayonnaise main dish recipe"
