Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We are really enjoying Oak Meadow grade 1. We plan to take breaks and randomly throw in a Five in a Row week here or there(for a change of pace) as the mood strikes. That's probably more for me than for the kids. I tend to get bored using the same program over a period of time. I must say I have been incredibly pleased with Oak Meadow- our start to the school year has been lovely.

I've had a lot of people ask me this question lately, and I'm not sure what to answer! We are mostly using Montessori albums, reading a lot of good books, taking a group Suzuki violin class, and attending a weekly PE class for home schoolers.

For "religion" we use CGS and the Baltimore Catechism (first communion volume.)

We're using Serendipity's plans for history, geography, poetry and Lively Language Lessons, and loving it all! I have 5th, 3rd and 1st graders working together. My first grader is also doing MCP A, Faith & Life 1 and Explode the Code. She's in the room while the rest of us do Apologia's Botany, participates as she pleases and it's amazing what she picks up. She also participates in our family religion, art, music and nature study. It's all working out well for us both.

I intended to use SWB's First Language Lessons, but honestly, I ditched it after the very first lesson in favor of Lively Language Lessons. FLL didn't give us anything new and we didn't really enjoy it.   LLL has a much more natural flow for us.

We're traveling along the History Trail, and my daughter loves it. We are happy with SWB's First Language Lessons although I'm beginning to skip lessons so I don't lose her (how many times do we need to go over capitalization of proper names, beginning, middle and last?).

We started out reading along with Elizabeth's science baskets too but have gotten detoured by hurricane reading, tracking and video watching online.

Madeline is also enjoying All About Spelling (of all things). I think the sequential presentation appeals to her.

Time for lunch!

For first grade we are enjoying:

*FIAR (and lapbooks)
*Queen's Language Lessons (not everyday)
*Usborne's First 100 words in spanish (I just make a game out of this, who can find something "azul" in the room? They have learned a lot this way!!)
*Bob Jones math
*lots of nature study, being outside, etc.
*Bible reading and memorizing - 1 longer passage per month - like the Lord's Prayer, Beatitudes, 1 Cor. 13, Psalm 23, etc.

I am using Miquon Math for grades 1-3. My son had a very, very "laid back" kindergarten, and this year is his first real "buckle down" year. He is just learning to read but loves the Miquon books, which he can do very independently and doesn't require much reading.

We are also using WordMastery for phonics, it's a free book written in 1913. He's learning to read quickly (partly, I think, because we waited until he was 'ready'.)

Last year, my daughter who is an early reader, loved her CHC My First Catholic Speller and all of my older kids use the series, too. I LOVE it, it is EXCELLENT!

Also use First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind for grades 1 and 2, and The Story of the World for History.

For my pre-K and 1st grader, we're also doing Serendipty/flower fairies supplemented with Alphabet Theme a Saurus activities.

Science is delight directed.

We use Math-U-See, MCP phonics, and the Balitmore catechism.

For handwriting, we have been using Seton but I just ordered Handwriting Without Tears. My child sure has a hard time in this area. One day last week, after sitting with him and watching him do every letter wrong, I knew something had to change. I am excited to get it and try.

We do not do anything for history. He has memorized history dates while learning along side his older siblings. For science, I send him out in the backyard to play with frogs.

I would love to start lapbooks with him. He would love it!

We're using:

RS Math, which we all love

Spell to Write and Read

FIAR and HSS

Seton and F&L

Well, we school year round and took a break to move. We havent started up yet but hopefully we can get fully unpacked this week and start slow next week. I might add in Real Science 4 Kids since i bought it in the summer. We'll see though.

Explode the Code book 2, Nora Gaydo's "Now I'm Reading" series, and simple math games have been our successes so far.
I'm planning on starting MCP math-bk A soon though.

We also read science books as interest arises so we've been reading about bats and weather.
