Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Mary M. has unveiled the new author for September.

It's a good one too.

(I wasn't sure whether to place this under the Great Outdoors/Living Literature/Picture Book Discoveries so I combined them all here. )

I just love Arnosky, and the Crinkleroot are really igniting a fire in my little guy for nature study! I do wish they were in print!

It is a sad reflection of the publishing industry for discontinuing the Crinkleroot series. Sad state.

All newcomers to Arnosky's work are encouraged to check their library system for the Crinkleroot books. Like Jenn said, they really do ignite a fire for nature study. Better than any picture books I know.

I fell in love with them myself a couple years ago.

Our library system has several of the Crinkleroot. But, even if your library doesn't have these, don't dismiss Arnosky's other books. He has a host of literary nature topics which are wonderful and has several of his books still in print though, I admit, if you have the Crinkleroot books your nature study for the month is written in stone.

I was able to get a few...just a few ...of his books posted on the Author Fiesta sidebar.

Everyone,
It's so simple.

Find your local public library's website. Then do a search for books by Jim Arnosky.

My library turned up 3 pages worth of his books!

Not all these books are available at that one library. But they are available parish wide (county for those outside Louisiana). With a simple click (and my library card # in front of me) I am able to reserve as many of these books as I'd like. I am also able to request they all be sent to the library down the road and around the corner from my house so I can jump out of my car on the way to dance or the store, produce my library card to the kind librarian and walk out of the library will my arms full...all in less than 5 minutes.

Don't miss the wonderful "Crinkleroot" guide coloring sheet
created by Joann's talented daughter Amy.

Mary M. has conveniently loaded a pdf version of the Crinkleroot coloring sheet on the Author Fiesta blog.

Oh! I love Arnosky!!!! What a great pick, Cay!

I have to say that I love reading along with an author this way - I mean I love themed reading, too. But, there is something so neat to me about pulling out all the Tasha Tudor books or all the Jim Arnosky books and reading the whole bouquet of them all together...just wanted to say that I like following along this way!

Thank you, Jennifer. I know exactly what you're saying.
I have fought this relationship for years now. To use this list or this list or this list.

To go with a theme, an author, a topic, a geographical location, etc.

Whew! It gets demanding to have so many options.

You'll notice in A Picture Perfect Childhood I give a different spread of booklists. The historical Children's Hour, various themed booklists (and only a fraction of what I could have offered), a yearly food theme, state study, list of virtues, petit fours for moms and more.

I've used them all...at different times, in different seasons, and in different moods.

The Author Fiesta is one focus out of many. It keeps us focused on one author each month. The purpose of the Author Fiesta is putting the The Children's Museum into practice.

We have and still use our themed booklists as well, but we have regular monthly visits from our author/artist friends as well so that we may know each one more intimately.

Oh great!

Dd was just looking at our author cards (I have printed out a pic w/ label of each author) and she asked why we haven't had any male authors yet.

It seemed "unfair" to her.

thanks again for doing this!

Could you tell us a bit more about your author cards, Maggie? I was thinking of doing this but don't want to reinvent the wheel if I don't have to. Thanks!

I have felt this new author announcemement breathing down my neck. lol I knew it was a-coming!!
We really enjoyed Tasha Tudor. The kids spent a LOT of time with her books. I fell ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE with A Time to Keep. I am purchasing that one for ME.
But I wish we (me with my kids) had more time throughout Aug to do something more --craftwise or otherwise...with Tasha Tudor. All they did was color a corgi. lol
I saw the AWESOME sparrow posts some of you made! What a creative bunch.

I know...the great thing about the Author Fiesta is that we can do it in our own time. I just feel compelled to keep up!

Stef -I kept it simple- i just went to the authors website and copies their "biography" pic- most authors have one pic that is their photo release and have permission to print it so I use that or in Tasha tudors case and old magazine photo (NOT MY VICTORIA! )

I put their name underneath and printed it.
I taped it onto blue cardstock and laminated -I have a huge surplus of photo sized laminating sheets -they are not fancy but servicable for the purpose.

you could just print on cardstock and save the effort.

We have language shelf which is a mish mash of alphabet and reading stuff but we have been keeping our author of the month books there- we have a little box on top and everymonth there is clue in it. This month the clue was a squirrel so the kids looked around and found another squirrel in the nature area with the author card.

They took the card to the language shelf which I had stocked with all his books while they were searching.

We have a tiny easel their for the cards.

dd like to know "who" is writing the books we read so these author fiestas have been great. It helps make the connection that these are peoples ideas and feelings not just "books".

I can email you the word doc if you would like- Im not sure how to post something like that on my blog.

PM me- Maggie

Don't miss Joann's nature expedition w/ Crinkleroot (she offers an added idea for older children) and Mary's tree study w/ Crinkleroot.

Such fun!

I'm realizing how many ways this little puppet can be used for nature study.

We've just had two hurricanes rip-roar through our area so today we're taking our Crinkleroot puppets to explore the damage that can only be caused by a hurricane.
