Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I didn't know where to post this, but I thought this post could be moved if need be. For the entire summer, I have had a stack of every sheet of math work that Luke did last year including all his handwriting practice etc etc. Usually, I file all his work away, but this year, I just want to toss all the math practice. Do I have to save all this to prove that he did finish math last year? Can I recycle it? I feel like if I chuck it, I'll just regret it. Ugh!!! Now, we're beginning a new year and I'll have more piles of work. I'm sure this topic has been discussed before, but any advice would be helpful. Thanks.

For math I only save tests. That should be ample proof of work accomplished. For handwriting or most other subjects I save especially well done samples. A few for each subject each year.

Each child has a file from each year. The current year fine has dividers for each subject so they can be filed easily. At the end of the year I cull it out and archive the work we saved.

and how much you choose to or need to save will also partly depend on your state requirements. You might check at HSLDA and see if they have recommendations for your state?

and if your state requirements are light on what you have to keep - be ruthless! If you box it up and save it (neatly labeled of course, by child, by year) it will multiply!

I always like to keep everything for a couple of years. When my oldest went to school in 7th grade the school asked for a little portfolio and it was very helpful to have those things on hand.

It is EASY to accumulate. I have been tossing things out this summer...:)

I do this too. After that, I toss out all except book lists, stories, special art, and anything that has a "real" memory associated with it.   After 15 years with 7 kids, even the distilled version is taking up several boxes so I think I will take photos of the bulk and only save a very few things for real.

I save workbooks if they're whole, but loose papers get sorted every few months. At the end of each "school day" I put all their papers in a file folder, then every few months I go through that and file a sample of their work in folders for each child/year. I probably keep about 10% of the worksheets, more for the drawings/projects. I also write occasional "progress reports" - basically a journal page talking about what they've been doing lately: new skills, interests, achievements, whatever. Those go in the year folder too.

This way I have a portfolio, in case anyone ever needs their "records" (we're in a state without those requirements) but also for them to see in 20 years. My mom came across some of my old work as she was cleaning out the attic last year, and it was really fun to look through, so I want to have some of that for my dc.

Usually what I do is keep a representative sample ... but then chuck that after a bit too as I figure in "real" school all they have is the test results or grades on a piece that "prove" competency. I figure if it's questioned, give 'em a test and see how they score.

But then I'm becoming more of a minimalist as we move so often

I'm with Mary on this.. having had my older children in school for sometime before we began homeschooling, I know they don't keep workbooks and assignments from one year to the next in the "real" schools , so I try to just keep a folder with samples of their work from each subject. I just don't have the storage space for more than that, either.

Thanks everybody. I am a minimalist at heart and I have the inclination to chuck everything since K right now! My husband tells me to put it in a box, but why he thinks it will only be one box eludes me! I remember a few years ago my mother-in-law gave my husband a box of his old elementary school work (she thought that he'd have an interest in looking at all that work). I remember he glanced at it before letting me toss it. He wasn't that interested to revisit elementary school. Ugh. I guess I could work on a representative sample just to unload things.

I think my hubby thinks that the homeschooling police will knock on the door and demand to see 300 pages of math worksheets at any moment.
