Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Elizabeth mentions (on her Real Learning CD from the conference) that YOUR teaching style is as important as your children's learning style.

What is YOUR teaching style? Care to share?

I think I would have to say that my teaching style is mostly literature based. If we can find good books to cuddle up together with, then we can study anything. We read and then enjoy going off on rabbit trails...
Whatever seems like a lot of fun-that's what we do.

(This isn't a helpful technique when I have to send in the awful reports to the local school district though...)

My style is definitely hands-on and active. Although I love reading and good literature, to me there is no substitute for going, seeing, and doing things yourself. It is my preferred way to learn and also the way I teach my children.

Joann-
I also find "teaching" through literature a large part of my style.

Theresa-
I am glad to hear that hands-on and active is your style. Honestly, it decreases my guilt over my own lack of hands on a little to know that the hands on approach works so well for you. I have always loved the hands-on ideas you have and the wonderful things you do with your children. I have often times tried to make myself a hands on "teacher." The truth is, I am just not able to sustain it. It is not my style after all. I do wish it was, though. Sigh.

Literature-based. Being more a facilitator to my kids' learning than a teacher -- learning with them, helping them to figure out how to learn something, rather than just teaching. Conversational (maybe a little Socratic, but not formally so). Geared towards enjoying my relationships with my children and being alongside them. Definitely mostly informal, though we do do a little formal "school" in the mornings right now.

Formal for basics (math, phonics, handwriting)in workbooks no less.
Together for as much as possible - (grammar, religion, etc) much less formal, but nothing to inovative or daring.
Then a more hands on, learn together by doing stuff mode. Our own personal eclectic style. We go on spurts of doing something, then something new.

Okay, true confessions...I have come to the conclusion that...gulp...I guess I'm more... traditional. I LOVE Charlotte Mason, Montessori, and Classical education styles. I have tried to fit the mold of one of these or all of them, since we started this jouney 7 years ago. But, maybe it's all my years as a classroom teacher... I feel the most peaceful and I feel like I accomplish the most when my kids do work in workbooks! I NEVER thought I would say that! I have to admit though, it's freeing to admit it. I have tried and tried and every year I end up burned out and not happy. This year, I've accepted who I am and I am actually excited to start. Now, don't get me wrong, we wont be doing all workbooks all day. I do love to read to my kids and we do take nature hikes and all that great stuff. I have things planned so that the morning will consist of traditional school work and the afternoon will include read alouds and nature hikes, and picture study. We'll see how it goes!
