Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I realised today that education for my soon to be 7dd is not inspiring to her. Due to logistics of lots of dc and older siblings she is missing alot of the 1st Grade experiences. It wouldn't hurt for dd4 and ds9 to have 'more fun' either. We do read picture books, poetry, nursery rhymes together and they enjoy that. But something more is needed.

Today I set up some Montessori type activities and included some wax crayons and paper. They choose to do the 'test testing' bottles and then spent a large time with the wax crayons. So how do you know when your children are better suited to a Montessori approach or a Serendipity style approach?

Erin - watch your children - they will let you know, and it could be that both styles have much to offer and you don't need to confine yourself to one or the other. My girls thrive with some aspects of Montessori math, but they also love the gnomes. The Montessori approach to grammar is not a good fit for them at all, for that they prefer workbooks (horrors! LOL) and copywork.

Do whatever feels right and is successful and makes everyone happy!

I hope this helps -

This is helpful, it really helps to talk things out sometimes    So basically I perhaps should try a mish-mash, I was thinking of trying the Gnomes and Numbers to see dd's response, but like your girls I do think she would respond well to Mont. Math, but then I have to make Mont. materials myself.

Erin, try this site -

http://www.montessoriforeveryone.com

It might give you some great ideas :) Make sure you check the blog section for inspiration.

Also, you can get pretty far with a set of base 10 blocks...

Good luck!
