Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I am considering using Sonlight.

My son is currently four and I am looking for preschool and then kindergarten ideas.

I have been looking at the P4/5 and K core with readers and language arts (but not science).

I have read thru a lot of the old threads and see some suggestions for tweaking (such as use the treasury box and stay clear of The Gods Must be Angry and New Toes for Tia)

Does anyone have any other suggestions for P4/5 and K and do you still recommend this program? I saw a lot of discussion back in 2005 about no longer using Sonlight.

Sonlight made some changes to their company that angered quite a few people (me included). But sometimes, a company change is not a good enough reason to stop using a product that works well at times for your family (sigh...Dh was the one who told me not to cut off my nose to spite my own face ).

I've got both of those programs and I still use them, without those books you already know about. I don't know how old your children are, but unless they are a wide age spread, I wouldn't do both of them. I'd choose one and modify slightly to make it work for both of them. As much as I love SL k, it has a huge deficit in the way of picture books. I generally don't use it with a child under an *older* 6 yr old at least, and if I have a 3 or 4 yr old along for the ride, I skip a lot of it in favor of a heavier picture book schedule.

I like SL K LA a lot.

Books,
My son is four (my daughter is only two). I am looking for preschool and trying to plan for kindergarten for my son so I was only looking for one core. I appreciate your comments about age appropriateness. That helps a lot.

I couldn't tell from the catalog, what exact is the LA? Is it a workbook?

I think I may try to use the Sonlight and skip some stuff so I can do FIAR and Catholic Mosaic.

Other than the objectionable books, anything in particular you recommend cutting out to make time for FIAR?

I appreciate all your suggestions.

When they say that core level is not grade level - it is true. Really. I used Sonlight alt-6 with a very advanced 8th grader - it was still *quite* challenging for her. ( I have also used Cores 100, 200, 300, and parts of K, and 1+2, and this year we will be doing Core 3 w/ a 4th grader, and JUST the history/geography of Core 1 w/a 1st grader. (I was going to actually use K for her, but I have a few reasons why I actually think in some ways 1 is easier than K.)

With a 2 & 4 year old, I wouldn't even consider Core K. I wouldn't use Core K until my child was at least 6 (Like Books said) - and I know of 8 year olds who got a full year out of it too. The other reason is I wouldn't want to hit Core 3 much before ages 9 or 10.

just my opinion, of course

Ditto-ing everything Laura said. Your oldest is only 4? Do FIAR and Catholic Mosaic and wait on SL for several years, in my humble opinion.

Thanks Laura and Books! I appreciate the assessment. Sounds like waiting a few years may be the way to go.

My daughter was 5 when we did P 4/5 this past year. We loved the literature selections. I do agree with the others that age should really not be the deciding factor on which core to use.
