I've discovered (finally, after 9 years) a glitch with homeschooling all year. I never get DEEP cleaning done. Either that, or home ec gets a TON of attention for a couple of weeks that year.
How did I discover this? My boys went to camp this week. I only have four kids at home to school and work with. The amount of work this pregnant body is able to do is AMAZING. I'm working from the basement (the boys' space) up. Next week, my daughter goes to camp. We'll tackle the upstairs at that time.
i'm really liking this 1/2 vacation.

That's why we take the summer off. Well, that, and we come from Buffalo, and summer is a precious commodity!
I wish I could say I was getting a lot done though. Life seems to keep getting in the way!

LOL. Too true. I sometimes wish we had months off for deep-cleaning and planning.
Right now though, I'm thankful we school year round 'cause the past two months or so I've let everything go with the pregnancy, and now I'm still catching up.
So my only solution to this problem: we deep-clean year-round as well... one room at a time... I guess you could say I'm not a "spring-cleaning" or "summer flinging" sort of person. I wish I were, but that's not the way life works around here...
I still have to send in the assessment tests, put their portfolios together, ugh, deep-clean the study, and then start on the planning. Or actually, I've been doing it on the sly... been buying one book a week the past 3 weeks.... one subject at a time... at this rate maybe we can get back to normal schedule by October.

Life has "gotten in the way" this summer. We've done very little schooling and very little cleaning.

We *have* to school year-round because we're always behind. I blamed it on pregnancy, moving, cranky babies, you name it. But just recently I realized that it's only this first child who's so far behind. I suffered long from I'm-A-Bad-Parent Syndrome over this one.

Tina, I completely agree with you about going all year. We are continuing our lessons throughout the summer due to my morning sickness in the winter and spring, and extreme off and on headaches since then. I am frustrated right now because there is so much that I want and need to do with our house before baby arrives and summer would be the perfect time to do it, but I can't do it all. We have made some necessary changes, but there is still so much to do.
All that said, if this baby were due in the spring, I would probably be lamenting the fact that we were homeschooling in November, December, and January.
God truly does know what is best!

In theory I deep clean slowly all year long too. I say in theory, because I think I took May 2007-July 2008 off of cleaning.

We need June and July for cleaning and home improvement and repair. But we can start school again in late July and all through August! Different years have different ways of turning out.

We also deep clean in the summer and, as tempted as I am to school year-round, I really need the break for this and other projects. Summer deep-cleaning really helps me not feel too guilty during the school year about my minimal cleaning routine.
I have heard of families who school year-round but, try as I might, it really doesn't work for us. My dh takes up to 3 separate week-long vacations in the summer and they are usually 4 weeks apart so just as you're getting your momentum...
Plus most of the homeschooling families we know also take the summer off so it's the time to get together as we rarely do during the school year.

So far I've combined both approaches by going year round, but having a much lighter summer schedule and taking off a week or so off whenever I need to during the summer.
This has allowed me to get to those areas that we didn't spend as much time on during the year (i.e. science experiments, nature journals, etc...). It also allows me to get intense spurts of cleaning and organizing done.
