I would love to hear how you cage or avoid the "there is so much great stuff out there and I don't want to miss any of it" monster?
I think often of Elizabeth's statement from the conference tapes about not being able to do all things worthwhile (paraphrasing here).
What else works for you?

oooh- this is a very relevant topic for me. I fall into that "I can't miss any of it and it's all so wonderful" trap constantly. I posted non multa sed multum (not many but much) on my fridge to remind myself that it is better for my children to deeply embrace a few concepts than to skim the surface of many. I am finding that by narrowing my curriculum choices to a few favorite resources, I am less inclined to get overwhelmed or "cram" too much in. One of the main reasons we home educate is to offer our children *time*, and if I'm trying to cram all the great homeschooling resources into our schedule, that gift is lost.
I'm listening with both ears for others' thoughts on this!

We live in an area that offers absolutely everything .... great music classes, swim club/lessons, gymnastics, drama, etc. and it's all just a few minutes drive from our house. We also belong to a homeschool group that offers wonderful field trips and classes, although these are usually about a half hour drive away.
This is a real monster in our lives and I am always trying to tame it. I have considered having a total activity-free year, but it is so hard.

For us this year it is called a 'tight budget'. Makes us rethink all of our decisions.
Now just to tame the 'mom researching on the computer all the great things' monster

Yes, this is a big one for us as well.
But really, I have come to the point where I simply remind myself that although sometimes it doesn't feel like it, we have plenty of time. Lots and lots of time to learn lots and lots of things together. And whatever doesn't get learned this year will get learned some other time.
Even at my grand old age I am still learning daily and loving it. That's what I want for my children. Not to learn on a timeline, but to learn for a lifetime.
That takes some of the pressure off feeling like I want to do it all right away.

Good question, this has been on my mind. This will be our first year homeschooling and because money is tight I can't buy everything that looks interesting...makes me kind of panicky, like I'm not going to give her a good enough education if I don't have every curriculum, book, craft, etc that I think she would like. Logically of course I know that's silly, but I'm a worrier I keep telling myself "it's just 1st grade!"

Katie,
The library is a great place for all the books you think your daughter would like. If she really enjoys them, then they make great gifts. As for crafts I think the best things are basic supplies that kids can use for their own ideas. As for classes, just look for free programs at libraries, museums, nature centers, etc. Just your family going to a nature center/park is a great science curriculum.
