The last 3 months have been pretty sorrowful at our house. My mom suffered a massive stroke on April 5th. I spent the first 30 days at her bedside day and night not knowing if she would live or die. She came out of her coma and has to have a trach and peg tube for feeding. She sometimes is responsive and other times she doesn't seem to know we are there. I just went to court yesterday to get Guardianship and Conservatory over her. I am very close to my mom and so our my children this was VERY unexpected. So to say life has been hard on all of us is pretty much an understatement. Mom is now in a nursing home down the street from our home and we can visit her each day, so now I am trying to put our life back in order. I have begun making plans for next year and since all of my children are older I want to enjoy these last few years with them. I want fun in our learning. Here are the grades they will be in this school year: 12th,10th,9th,and the youngest will be in 7th grade. Please list any ideas of subjects that you think fun could be added too.
3 of them are high school and there is so much "book work" that needs to be done that it is hard to bring fun into those things.
Thanks for the help.

I don't know if I can offer you any ideas for children those ages as my only is going into the first grade. I just want to HONOR you for honoring your mother the way that you are. Your children have learned more about their faith these past few months than a year of religious book learning watching you in action. May God grant you peace and many blessings during this fruitful, though sorrowful time.
My only advice is to maybe have a family meeting where you have an open discussion about your family's current situation and then ask them what they think would be fun. It may not even be fun subjects they come up with but fun family time like a pizza night followed by games or bowling.
I will be praying for your family and especially your mother.

I noticed you have been quiet Jackie. I'm sorry to hear about your mom.
I'm about the least fun mom on the planet, but my teens do enjoy hiking or biking with us. Food treats and late night conversation.
I think you can bring fun into science and history pretty easily. Historical movies, museum trips, re-enactments...
even service projects as a family can be fun.

Jackie,
Good to hear from you. I was wondering too, where you had been. Sorry to hear about your mother. Something we love to do is watch movies (Faith and family flix is good) and then we have been using Bravewriter Goes to the Movies . (scroll about 1/2 way down to find it) We use this to discuss plot, theme, characters, setting, etc. I think it helps in analyzing the story line, which is helpful for the high school level and its fun to watch the movies. You could use some of their English literature and watch the movies for those selections (after they read them) and then go through the analysis of the movie. Field trips are also fun if you have any good historical places to visit or state parks. HTH

Thank you for your kind words and prayers. When mom was in the hospital on Sundays we would go to a park close to the hospital and have a breakfast picnic together before our Sunday visit with her. That seem helpful to us all.
I guess I was looking for a unit study that maybe the 3 younger ones could do with one another. History might be the best route. We need to finish up American history civil war to current history.
I am just worried that with so many other duties now I will lose track of time and miss out on their final years at home. And I want them to walk away with many happy memories. Please keep the ideas coming. And many thanks again!

They are going to walk away with the knowledge of HOW family is SUPPOSED to be! Your example to them can never be taught in a textbook.

Just wanted to second Lisa's movies suggestions - for high schoolers and little ones. Movies have been great dicussion tools here and have sparked many different rabbit trails.
