Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi, I'm a long time lurker on this board and wanted to finally come out and introduce myself. I'm Angela, and my dh, 3 kids, and I live in NYC. We started homeschooling 3 years ago and used CM, then let go of schedules for a couple of years (unschooled) and now we're back to CM. The kids I homeschool (dd-11 and ds-7) requested more structure and a daily weekly schedule. They have always loved CM activities, so for the last few months we created a schedule together. Dd-14 is a public high school student by choice.

I came across AmblesideOnline and I love the schedules they have. I was thinking of starting ds in Yr 1 and dd in year 6 starting in September. We'll use the MA Catholic religious education schedule (Yrs 1B and 3) instead of the AO one and will also leave out AO's church history section. The kids are excited about it and we'll probably do some AO earlier years' stuff over the summer.

Math is Teaching Textbooks for dd and various fun workbooks for ds (might eventually purchase formal math program for him). The kids also want to learn Spanish and Latin this year.

Anyone else "Catholicize" AO? Any advice for me?

Thanks!

Angela

I guess I do -- I use an MA/AO combo.   This year it's going to look more like MA -- sometimes it is closer to AO -- it usually depends on what time period we are at in history.

I have a year 7 and 2 Year 1 children this year. For the year 7 I am using mostly MA Level 3 with possibly some AO choices as supplements.

For AO year 6 in the past, I have skipped David Livingstone (substituted a saints' bio) and I haven't used the Genesis book by Ruth Beechick.

Your name and location sound familiar -- I think I may remember you from your more unschooling days? maybe from an Unschooling Voices carnival?

Hello, Angela.

I have tried and tried to like AO's schedules and make them work for us. I'm afraid I love them on the screen and in paper but my family's life flow follows no one's schedule but our own.

I've also found, through the years, that MODG allows me to catholicize our schooling while giving us the bend we need to allow for CM's short lessons, nature study, rabbit trails, etc. It even allows us to throw in things we like from CHC and Seton and MA and AO, etc.

Of course, I'm not saying I follow MODG either. I've bought the manuals and they don't work either. So I've learned to save my money, make our own CMish plans from DYOCC and going with that. It's the unschooler in me as well.

I think creating a schedule "together" has you off to a good start.

Thanks so much for your replies!

Kristie - I am excited to see how this year pans out. Thanks for the encouragement!

Willa - Thanks for the heads-up on the substitiutions. We'll probably do the same. I contributed to an Unschooling Voices once .

Cay - I agree that it all looks great on paper. We plan on just doing what we can and tweaking here and there as needed. Thanks.
