Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi! I'm not a frequent post-er, but I've got a concern about my soon to be 5 year old. We'll start homeschooling in the fall. We have enrolled with St. Thomas Aquinas Academy.

I guess I'm concerned about what she knows now & what she needs to know at her age. I've heard lots of different things. Of course, we'll be schooling at home - so it shouldn't matter, but it matters to me.

We've never had a TV, so we've read LOTS - I mean LOTS - since she was a baby. She can write her name, but can't identify any other letters, let alone write them. She can't identify any numbers, but she can count to 20 (mostly). She loves books, loves to be read too, loves to look at them, and we are beginning to read some chapter books now.

I thought we were doing mostly everything right by reading a lot & limiting movies (we do have a PC we watch movies on, which she loves to do).

Am I doing something wrong/not right? Any advice out there from other moms....

Trust me, you are doing NOTHING wrong!!! The fact that you read a lot to your daughter is GREAT IMHO. You are feeling what EVERY homeschool mom feels, felt and some, (myself included) still feeling after years of homeschooling. On that note, welcome to the club.

I'm new to the forum but here are some really good threads on Early Childhood Learning

God Bless you on your new journey.

Every child is different so you will get a different list from everyone that you talk to. My dd is the same age as your dd and she can do all of the things that your dd is doing. I am okay with that. I think the most important things for K is to read lots, play outside and do crafty things (if she is so inclined.)

Blessings,

Every child is different. It sounds like you're doing great!

My 2 boys are 18 months apart and as different as night and day. When we started K officially for my oldest, he *knew* so much already. Nate knew much less when we started K with him, but he's done great this year and has learned very well at his own pace, in his own way.

I think you'll be surprised by her progress next year as you start following a specific curriculum and having her complete certain tasks.

I think reading is so very important. You've got a great start right there!
