Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hello everyone!

Is anyone familiar with Carole Joy Seid? I have the opportunity to attend a seminar she is giving in the DFW area and was wondering if it would be a worthy investment of my time.

A very sweet lady spoke at our homeschool meeting a few nights ago and talked about how inspirational and encouraging a speaker she is--in the mold of Raymond and Dorothy Moore. Has anybody seen her speak?

I have!

I heard her speak last Fall. I believe she does two seminars, one aimed at elem. ages and one middle/high school aged. The one I attended was for the middle/high school group. I borrowed the tapes from a girlfriend for the elem. aged one.

If you like the Moore's, then you will like the seminar. You need to know up front that she is *very* opinionated :-) and very very "Calvary Chapel" when it comes to God. She tells her conversion story and her perspectives on the Bible...

There are a few books she likes and recommends that I would NEVER use.

That said, I attended with another Catholic girlfriend and we were very very blessed and excited when we came out of the seminar.

I was initially skeptical because she homeschooled their ONE child (she also has a masters in Education). Its easy to call oneself an expert based on one child, kwim? But the thing I *really* liked was that she never says anything without backing it up with extensive research...she talks a lot about eye development and brain development in children, for instance. She is definitely of the Better Late than Early perspective. Even though I was familiar with the Moore's, I still learned a lot and came away very convinced by her research. I actually took notes on the tapes I borrowed...something I had never done before or since.

She offers books for sale before, during lunch, and after the seminar(she does not allow books to be sold during the seminar so sneaking out early will do you no good). The good stuff goes early, so make sure to browse the books before the seminar starts and bring some money with you if you are a bookaholic. Other than Elizabeth in Real Learning, Carole is the only other person I know of recommending the Gene Stratton Porter books, for instance. There are some neat books there that I had never seen before. She also had some neat ideas regarding Timelining in the high school years.

The seminar is looooooooonnnggg...go well rested and expect to be there all day. :-)

If you want to know something else, let me know and I'll try to answer. She doesn't write because she really believes her gift is communicating in person, so its hard to get much info on her ahead of time.

hope this helps!

Hi Jennifer,

I was just wondering if you ended up going to the seminar. If so, did you enjoy it?

Hi Books,

No, I didn't get there. My one year old is hitting a rough stage--too old to take and too young to be left for that long without nursing...

I did have a friend go and she reported back that it was wonderful. I'm hoping to get a chance to see her one day, though. She speaks at a nearby church on a fairly regular basis, so I hope I will be in a better place to hear her wisdom next time!

I was intrigued by her advice (via my friend) that no "formal learning" take place for boys until age 12--makes me feel better about my 5 yr old boy who I can barely corral for a read aloud or a bit of math!!

Thanks for the review! I ended up ordering the seminar tapes through the net the other day. I'm actually thinking about doing a consultation with her.

If you decide to go another time, please share?

Books!

I think I will get to go to Carole Joy Seid's seminar next month. It is the same one you attended, I think. It is called "Begin with the End in Mind" and is geared for junior high/high school ages... I need a little pep-me-up and think this could help!

If there's anyone who is interested in going in the DFW area, PM me and we could try and meet there!

I just finished listening to the seminar on tape about younger children. I was very inspired to reduce the amount of schoolwork my younger children are doing and to get into more "real learning" type activities. She is such a breath of fresh air, especially when it comes to talking about what boys are developmentally capable of. It was very freeing for me. She is such a champion of beautiful books, too. Just listening to her makes me want to read whatever she is talking about.

I haven't seen any seminars, so far, in my area. I'm bummed. I can't wait to hear what you think of her!

Books,
If I get there (which I will if dh can handle all the kiddos!), I will post a review...I could definitely use a homeschool pick-me-up! I've got the February blah's and it's still January!
