I don't know how many Catholic unschoolers we have here, but I wanted to share a post about Lenten strewing and how we as unschoolers try to inspire Lenten practices.

This has been a recent discussion at the Unschooling Catholics email list and I'm interested in the thoughts of others. How do we inspire and/or require Lenten practices?

My kiddos are still pretty small, so choosing one thing to do throughout Lent is difficult. Last year we tried to choose one thing for each day of the week, but we got a little complacent by the end. Today, I cut out letters R-E-P-E-N-T and an exclamation point to make seven and hung them from our liturgical line (a piece of ribbon stretched across our mantle where we mark the liturgical feasts and seasons). I wrote prayer, fasting, or almsgiving on each letter and rejoice on the exclamation point. On Monday we will choose a way to incorporate more prayer into our day, on Tuesday, fasting, on Wednesday, almsgiving, then we will repeat them on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sundays will be for rejoicing.
I think this method will keep us focused, but allow the kids to be inspired or guided as they make choices throughout Lent. And I hope they will begin to discover the forms of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving that provide the most spiritual fruit for them and to repeat those regularly.
Tomorrow the kids will wake to our images and statues shrouded in purple, we'll pack away our Alleluia letters, and attend noon mass. I'll introduce the repent idea to them at tea time. We'll do the Stations of the cross in the evening. I hope it will be the beginning of an inspiring Lent.

I made a simple lent calendar this year - just squares with numbers plus circles for the sundays:

You cut it out and glue it together to make a long strip. It's made for a4 paper, probably works for letter ??

Last year I did I more creative one with coloured card, hand written numbers.
