I searched for this topic and couldn't find anything so if you know of any older threads, please send them my way.
This thread got me thinking. Does anyone here school through the summertime so that they can take off during times of the year when the weather is nicer? Maybe this is just a regional thing, but our summers are so hot and so long that when the cool air starts making its way down here, I want to just go play, play, play all day. But, being a more scheduled person, I do have things that I want to accomplish for the year.
So how do you do it if you do? Does it work for you? Have you tried it and not liked it? Our state is very friendly to homeschoolers, but I don't want to give people the wrong impression if we are out and about all the time. What do you say to people about your unusual schedule?

We have always schooled through the summers (we are in the same state as you and "suffer" the same summer heat). I enjoy setting it up this way because it affords breaks along the way when the need arise (new baby, vacation opportunity, etc) and I don't feel the stress of missed days.
This summer we tried something different. We stopped "regular" school for the summer months and concentrated on what I called enrichment courses -- things we had been meaning to study but never got around to it. This summer, for instance, my eldest delved into his Latin, logic, and a proofreading/editing course. We tended to have a shorter day than a typical school day but much more time was devoted to each subject. It was such a hit with the kids I think we will try it again next summer.

We go year round too, but we're much more "unschooly" in the summer. It does make for a lot more flexibility, as Margaret said, with breaks when you need them.
I need to be inside half the summer bc my allergies are so bad. So, we'll take the early summer and spring for more time outside.
Another advantage is that you can fit all kinds of things in that otherwise might get shoved aside-- exactly "enrichment". And it makes a lot less review time.

We go through summer too-so we can break when we want too! However, I am finding summer becoming a break too as ds gets older. Most of the homeschool group we hang out with breaks for summer and his cousins are in school and we visit during summer now. So, I am trying to come up with a new "plan."

We start our school year in July and usually finish in late April, including numerous breaks.

I have re-started school up in the summer a couple of times, but only when I'm pregnant and due in the middle of the year. It worked out fine both times, and I was sure glad to be able to take a month or so off from school after having a baby.

Up until this past year, we have always schooled year round. I liked doing it this way so that if life intervened and we had to take a week off here and there, I wasn't panicking about missing school. But this past summer, we took the summer off. I just could not handle school, gardening and yard work all at once. Each way has it's pros and cons.

Yes, we schooled through the summer b/c i knew i'd take some time off after i had the baby(Oct) and for my parents visit(this month) and of course the holidays. Plus, it rained most of the summer and the only month it didnt rain(Aug) it was so hot, i didnt even want to go outside. I like schooling year round so that way, i can take off when we need to or want to and not really worry about it.

We "school" year round - we have so many days all year when we don't do anything formal that doing some formal work in the summer works it all out ( in my eyes). 
We learn all the time anyway, so there is no big deal for us to do some Maths or writing or whatever, in summer - January here.....

We start the school year with a three week "mini-session" in July; mostly review items and some unit studies. We then take August off and start up when the other schools begin, finishing up by Memorial Day to take June off. During the year we usually take a week off every 6-7 weeks, and up to 2 weeks at Christmas. We've done this schedule for about 3 years and love it!
