As a spin off of the "who is doing K" thread, I am wondering, who is doing 3rd grade this coming year? And what do your plans for that look like? (Yes, I am fishing for inspiration! )

I'm mostly going to follow MODG, but I don't use Abeka (MODG recommends for science and history). So, I've decided to do 7 weeks of everything but science and art, and then do 2 weeks of only science and art.
That will give me some planning time for science units. We're definintely going to do the human body, snakes, and a microscopic exploration box I bought 2 years ago. Art will probably be integrated, so I'll try to think of a way for them to artistically present some of their scientific findings. Plus we'll do our usual visits to the local art museum with our "local" forum friends, and play with Mommy It's a Renoir Cards.
For saint narrations, I went through Catholic mosaic and picked them from there and wrote them in my calendar so I won't forget them. (That actually may be my 1st grader that it's planned for, but we'll all do them.)
At some point we'll finish our study of Vietnam and do our Washington DC from A-Z scrapbook.
This is a compromise between the grand vision I had of doing it all on my own and the safety net of the prewritten curriculum.

After A LOT of prayer and late-night discussions with my dh, we will be homeschooling next year. Our oldest dd will be in 3rd grade.
We sent off our application to St. Thomas Aquinas Academy last week and are eagerly awaiting our assessment packet. STAA will help me design a curriculum for my 3rd grader and kindergartender and will organize them into the same time periods and subjects for history, science, and religion as much as possible. I anticipate that this will be more important as our children grow older. I expect to be mostly working on the basics with my kindergartener.
The only things I am really set on doing with my 3rd grader are CHC for spelling; Math U See; CHC's Easy as 1-2-3, science books from the library, experiments from The Science Sourcebook, and nature study for science;Mary's White League from Fatima Family Apostolate for religion, along with lots of read-alouds and the Baltimore Catechism; singing with The Singing Bee and The Adoremus Hymnal, piano lessons with Alfred's piano series, maybe sight singing with Sing Praise to God by Note from Alan Jemison, and lots of listening to classical music CD's from the library for music appreciation, looking at art prints for the library for art appreciation, continue reading The Chronicles of Narnia out loud for literature, Writing Can Help for cursive handwriting...well, I guess I'm "set" on doing quite a few things!
Don't know what I'll be doing for geography, grammar, history, Latin, writing, or art, or even IF I'll be doing all of those. I want to be sure to do more music next year, as I am a musician and I can teach that to my dc rather easily. I have been neglecting music in favor of becoming more of an expert in other things, but I think my time would be better spent teaching them what I know (and love) already.
I am hoping for lots of personalized guidance from STAA in helping me form realistic goals, pacing, and organizing everything.
Dawn

I will have a 3rd grade son this fall.
I'm not sure about many things but here's a few things I DO know we're doing:
-Horizons math-will finish 2 in mid fall then go to 3
-Winterpromise American Story 1 for history
-Beautiful Feet Geography with the Hollings bks
-Happy scribe copywork bks
-Spectrum Phonics 3
-HWT-cursive (or Pentime transitions if he's not ready)
-various reading lists
Amidst the above I'd like the do The Classics at Home by Ann Ward with my 3rd grader and K'er which covers Beatrix Potter, Pooh, and Charlotte's Wed
Grammar?-Growing w/ Grammar or Primary Lang Lessons?
Writing?-either Just Write 1 or Bravewriter or Spectrum writing 2
Spelling-Sequential spelling?

We'll be doing 3rd grade here. I think I'll be using most of what's in the CHC 3rd grade lessons plans, but on my own schedule. I plan to use:
CHC Spelling and Grammar
MCP C math
Faith & Life 3
Behold & See 3 for science
I'm going to try the Tour of the Countries, but if my ds isn't really enjoying the hands-on activities, I will probably drop them and just do read-alouds for history. I won't know until I try it.
I haven't planned art, music, read-alouds, etc. yet.
I'm going to try a 5 day schedule this year instead of CHC's 4 day schedule because I want to try to finish up by the end of April. May is a great time of year to be outside around here.
I'm not sure how I will do science and history. I don't think I like to do a little bit of both each day. I may do a Country for a couple of weeks, then switch to a chapter of the science book.
Sorry I'm kind of thinking aloud here. I've already ordered most of what I'll use, but I haven't had time to write out the plans yet.

For our 3rd grader we will be doing:
-Rod &Staff Math
-Spelling list with word families
-Italic Handwriting C
-Prima Latina (Memoria Press)
-French(Memoria Press) Because she insists on learning french
-Exploring Astronomy(Apologia Science)
-Ancient History,Rome, Greece using Story of the World Vol I-with lots of read alouds(O.T. Bible included along with memorizing the Baltimore Catechism)
-Copy work and dictation
-Piano lessons
-She draws A Lot on her own for Art -maybe a few lessons from the Drawing Textbook
We won't be doing ALL of this everyday!!! We may do lots of science one day a week and then the next week do lots of history for a couple of days that week.
What we will do everyday is Religion, Math, and Latin,Spelling and Dictation
Any of the above subject to change without warning!
Hope this helps:)

My middle son will be 3rd grade this year. I'm still working out our plans, but so far this is what I have:
Math: Saxon 3
+ Plus I'm having the boys keep a math journal (a project that didn't get off the ground last year but I *really* want to do this year).
Language Arts:
Language of God B
My Catholic Speller, Level B
+ Plus copywork and narration, more independent reading (book list still under construction).
History:
Story of the World Volume I: Ancient Times
+ One of our closest hs-ing families is also doing this volume and we plan to do the activities together.
Geography: State capitals
+ We're starting an index card file box with a card for each state, kept sorted by region.
Science: We are studying Chemistry as a family using:
Eyewitness Chemistry
Adventures with Atoms and Molecules: Chemistry Experiments for Young People
+ We are doing the experiments with another homeschooling family on a weekly basis. I'll have my 3rd grader keep a notebook where he can write definitions and record experiments.
Art, Music, Nature Study and Religion, still in planning mode.

Our middle daughter will be going into 3rd grade. My rough plans are much like Dawn's, using CHC for spelling and grammar. We also will be doing history and science as a family, studying the ancients using Connecting With History, Volume I, and studying chemistry (still looking for some good resources).
Math will be a new adventure for us as we leave Saxon and start Math-U-See. I do have the worksheet books for Saxon 3 still, and might use them from time-to-time.
Art: haven't thought much about it yet, but I have a couple of books from Seton as well as the Mommy It's a Renoir cards. I may just hang out here and join in on artist study.
Music is kind of the same as art. I have resources galore, I just don't pull them out as often as I should. I might have her listen to the Music Masters CDs every couple of weeks and maybe do some music theory with Let's Learn Music.
Nature study happens naturally around here...nothing systematic, but it is a daily event.
Religion is a component of Connecting With History, but will be enhanced with activities for the liturgical year and her CCD class.

My oldest will be in 3rd grade in the fall. This past year, we have been doing school in a very relaxed manner. Our only schedule is Bible and math daily. The rest does get done, but not in accordance to a set time every week. This is working out very well for us, so we will continue our learning time in this way.
Here are the resources that we will be using:
Math--RightStart Math, living math resources
Language Arts--KISS Grammar, WISE Guide to Spelling, copywork,
History--Finishing up SOTW 3 and then moving on to 4
Science--chemistry. Eyewitness Chemistry, Real Science 4 Kids, Fizz, Bubble & Flash
Foreign Language--Easy Spanish. My dd is doing latin on her own with Minimus
Art, Music and Nature Study are done with various resources that I have.
Blessings,
Julia

Dawn,
We used Adventures with Atoms and Molecules for our weekly "Adventures in Science" experiment co-op last fall and loved it. We wanted to have the girls (2 3rd graders and one 4th grd) keep a proper lab report journal and were very pleased with My Science Journal . It is a pre-printed science notebook that has space to write the date, title, hypothesis, materials, steps, data gathered, conclusion, as well as a page on how the information could be used, what they liked and disliked, who should do it the experiment and new vocabulary terms. The girls also have a separate "My Observations" sheet I made on MS Word to illustrate what they saw. We loved having the notebook and found it to be a great program. Here is a link to a post on our end of semester fizzy, slobbery test Hope you enjoy chemistry as much as we did!

I still have to write a detailed plan and lots of planning needed still - but my rough outline for my twins is as follows:
Math - Horizons 3
Reading - lots and lots of readalouds and a list of readers for them. Many tied in with themes below - but also a set list of "classics"
Latin - finish off Prima Latina and start Latina Christiana
Major Unit Study on the 2nd World War - with lots of readers, read alouds and writing. They will also be doing the Hands of a Child Lapbook. Lots of local field trips. (DC/Arlington etc)
Trail Guide to US Geography - making Notebooks of State studies. Reading books specific to states. Will incorporate writing etc
Unit Study on John Paul - plus trip to JPII cultural center in DC. Study will incorporate writing and religion etc
Drawing - The Phonics of Drawing
Art Appreciation - artist per 2weeks/month - using Mike Venezia books and videos, plus others. Also Discovering Great Artist projects. Still in planning stage - lots of great internet resources too.
Music playing - piano and violin lessons.
Music appreciation - study of the instruments of the orchestra. Still planning stage. Using the Story of the Orchestra, Young Persons Guide, and good websites. Then move to various composers - using various cds and dvds and books from the library. Plans to go to some "instrument petting zoos" and to a local youth orchestra performances which are reasonably priced.
Writing/Grammar - not sure if I need to add given all the writing above. Plus we will do copywork using Startwrite
Spelling - Spelling Power
Poetry - continue memorization from Lingusitic Development through Poetry Memorization
Religion - living the liturgical year, continuing Catholic Mosaic and LY Notebooks, continuing Blessed Mother Notebooks, usual family prayers etc. Lots of Saint Stories - following our Liturgical Wheel (love Anne's picture files)- Windeatt and Vision and Pauline.
Science - low key - nature walks and using resources we have for geology and chemistry. (which we never got round to doing in Grade 2)
My major problem right now - how to organize the day/week/month/semester. I want Fridays for nature study and outings. I want a high concentration on music and art and religion - compared to the year just gone where we focused more on the "academic". I am praying for guidance before I spend any money or make any plans.
Thanks for starting this thread - and making me put my thoughts down on paper (keyboard?)

Wow! I need to bone up my plans, I think.
We will loosely follow CHC's third grade plans.
I plan to use PLL instead of LOG. I may change my mind about that. DS really struggles with Language Arts, so I'm hoping to work on creative writing with him this year. It is a struggle, though. I am contemplating Writer's Jungle because ds is such a reluctant writer. He is so afraid of being less than perfect. That's why he loves math. It's black and white. I do see him blossoming this summer, though. We have followed a very unschooly schedule, and it has been wonderful for him. He will actually draw now, and he used to be afraid of art. So...we will probably keep it loose for him.
I know we will do math(MCP at his request), reading lots of good literature, Latin(Prima Latina), science through nature, geography(tour a country), and creative writing/journaling. Beyond that it will be up to ds. And we probably won't do science and geography every day. This is the most laid back I have ever been, but right now it is working.
