Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum for my question (perhaps A Living Faith?), but here it is ...

Can someone share what they have used with their children for "character education"? Have you found using an actual curriculum beneficial at all? Or have you not seen the need for such a formal approach?

I am not sure I want to add another "subject" to our week, and yet I wonder if this would be a great way to enforce the values I hope my children are developing as a normal course of life ...

Also, can anyone comment on the following programs?

Character Building by David Isaacs
PACE (Program for Achieving Character Education) offered by Emmanuel books
Teaching Character Through Literature (Beautiful Feet)

Thanks!

I have PACE and like it very much. I don't use it on a regular basis. I pull it out when we need to work on a particular issue. A while back some of my children were doing a lousy job following through on their school work and chores and one was having a hard time in a sport.

I pulled out the lesson on perseverance. We wrote out the quotes and posted them and did some of the suggested reading. The discussion questions were a good spring board as well.

I approach it as something we are working on as a family and we all try to encourage each other.

Bridget,

Thanks for your post. I have to say, the PACE program is probably at the top of my list for this subject, so I am glad to hear you enjoy it. I like that it gives suggestions for literature and Bible connections, especially.

I think I would end up using it as you do. It makes sense to use it in this way, to work on certain things as you see the need.

Has anyone seen the Virtue Tree they have in the CHC catalog? I can't remember what grade it is for and can't locate my catalog.

I remember thinking it was a creative way to study virtues.

It is in the middle school years - I think either 7th or 8th grades. We plan on using it with our children and I am just beginning to look at the material now as my CHC order arrived and I am beginning to tweek things for next year.
