I have decided to use FIAR in the fall for my soon to be five year old. I want to try notebooking/lapbooking. I've tried in the past, but failed-I think because I didn't plan/prepare the materials before hand.

Any helpful links on very basic lapbooking? How to get all the parts and pieces ready for a lapbook before we start? I saw these
at the Five in A Row Website and was wondering if anyone has used them.

Thanks!
Jennifer

me again.

I see on the FIAR website that Before FIAR is recommended for children 2-4, but some of the books used are among our favorites! Should I start with Before FIAR?

Thanks

You'd think I would try and put all my questions into one post...
Is there a yahoo group for Catholic moms using FIAR? Or should I keep these topics here?

What do you feel the main benefit of using FIAR is? Any downsides to the program?

Selecting which level may depend on where your son is at.

Right now, my FIAR manuals are packed up because we are painting so I can't give you a sample of the lesson plans, but maybe someone else could or take a look at the FIAR website for samples.

I did their Make Way For Ducklings -- Fold n Learn and won't purchase another one unless the content improves. A bunch of duck pictures to glue to a folder isn't my idea of a notebook or lapbook. There were a few things the younger set may like....counting objects & making tally marks and writing numbers for a calender.

The product pictures on their website is what you get...very pretty, but I expected more. You can do a quick search & print out a map, a flag, various duck pictures, type up the vocab words...simple stuff.

If you're sure you will be doing FIAR in the fall, start filing away ideas & print off stuff now. That way you can just pull out the file pertaining to the book you are working on. Create the folder to fit YOUR child's interests & capabilities.

There are several posts here on the forum w/ lapbook links if you do a search.

Here's one to get you started: How to Begin Lapbooking

Check out the Fiar Circle website. They have field trip ideas and (more to the point) pictures of the FIAR lapbooks that they've done. (Click on the link in the sidebar.)

Ami* has a bunch of neat links at Homeschool Share too, including pictures of FIAR lapbooks.

Maybe looking at the Before FIAR lapbooks at homeschool share would help give you an idea of whether or not you'd like to try that? I've only used volumes 1-4.

I personally love using FIAR because I use it as the basis upon which to build unit studies. I use their suggestions, along with what I find here and at the FIAR message boards to build a unit study that I can use for everyone from the 4yo to the 13yo. (Of course, I supplement heavily for my older two while I leave out much with the younger ones.)

There is a Catholic FIAR Yahoo group

It is kind of slow but it would be great to see it get a little busier!

Thanks for the heads up, Michaela. I was considering buying the same
Fold n Learn because it looked cute on their website!

We've madeThe Little Red Lighthouse and the Great Gray Bridge
and Snowflake Bentley lapbooks, and I have to say, I would welcome
a pre-made set of items to paste in the next one! Anyway, my kids really enjoy making them, and the FIAR circle site has helped alot.

I am very new at lapbooking. We completed one from Hands of a Child. We did Curious George. I was very happy with that. Right now we have just started a lapbook for May dedicated to Our Blessed Mother. I just posted the beginning of it on my blog.

Everything we are doing is very basic by using ideas found on different websites and ideas from Hands of a Child. (for example the little folder for the Holy Cards)

I think we will add some maps and a little book of Mary's life. I am really enjoying it and so are the kids. They are beginning to come up with their own ideas also. I think that is very exciting. I am going to keep updating it as we go along.

There will be a delay though as I am having surgery on Thursday, but I think this activity we be able to continue because of the ease and enjoyment the kids are having with it.

Thank you all! I've been following the links and am getting so excited about this!

I think the most important thing for me to do is plan ahead and will spend the next couple of months doing that before the "official" start of kindergarten this fall.

Hands of a Child has lap books for many of the FIAR books. We have been using them with much pleasure this year. Personally, I need to be able to just print it out, or I don't seem to get it all organized

Hi!

I haven't purchased a Fold and Learn yet. We had already rowed those two books this year before they put the Fold and Learns out. I would like to try at least one so I can form an opinion myself. I think you have to make your own minit books to put the information in. I have some   Minit Book Templates ready to go at Homeschool Share. I hope to make more in the future, but it's hard to find the time to do everything I want to do with that website. It's kind-of become a beast!

I am in the process of creating minit books for various FIAR titles that we row. I wish I had pictures of our notebook, but I don't. I will try to point you in the right direction--

When we rowed Miss Rumphius, we used the minit books I made ahead of time (up on Homeschool Share for anyone to use). Miss Rumphius Resources at Homeschool Share

I also made a few for Follow the Drinking Gourd
Resources for Follow the Drinking Gourd at Homeschool Share

If you want to see what is available for each title, go to Five in a Row Resources

It should help you get started...don't do work that's already been done!

Also, I haven't used very many HOAC Lapbooks, but I loved Blueberries for Sal (Before FIAR title); it was great! And I bought the ebook, so I can use it again with my other child (and hopefully future children, too). I have put some suggestions for each FIAR title (Additional Resources such as Lapbooks that would go -along) on each Resource Page. Sometimes, there's even a freebie (like the Apple Learn N' Folder posted on the How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World page).

Also, if you let me know what books you hope to row next year, I can start working in that direction (if they are books we are rowing, too!) to make those resource pages better.

You asked about Before Five in a Row...how old is your student? In my humble opinion, most of the activities in the Before book are for 2-3 year olds. Some of the books could be used for 4-5 year olds, but I would want to supplement with more FIAR like activities.   I used Before when my son was 3. I used the Blueberries for Sal Lapbook from HOAC when he was 5.

Okay, I think I've said enough! Let me know if you have any questions!
